It is a romantic novel by Jane Austen published anonymously in three
volumes in 1813 which is a classic of English literature written with incisive wit and superb character delineation. It centres on the turbulent relationship between Elizabeth Bennet, the daughter of a country gentleman, and Fitzwilliam Darcy, a rich aristocratic landowner. It is a personal development novel in which the two main figures, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, each must mature to overcome some crises and learn from their mistakes in order to face the future together, overcoming the class pride of Darcy and the Elizabeth's prejudices towards him. Characters: Elizabeth Bennet: she is the second-eldest of Bennet´s daughters who is witty and intelligent but with a tendency to form tenacious and prejudicial first impressions. As the story progresses, so does her relationship with Mr Darcy Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy: he is Mr Bingley's friend and the wealthy owner of the family estate of Pemberley in Derbyshire, While he is handsome, tall and intelligent who lacks ease and social graces, and so others frequently mistake his initially haughty reserve and rectitude as proof of excessive pride which in part it is. Darcy fall in love of Elizabeth Bennet who meets in a dance. Mr Bennet: he is an indolent person and father of five ladies (Jane, Elizabeth, Catherine, Lydia and Mary) and Ms Bennet´s husband. Ms Bennet: she is Mr.Bennet´s wife and mother of five ladies. She is also an hypochondriac who imagines herself susceptible to attacks of tremors and palpitations (her "poor nerves") whenever things are not going her way. Her main ambition in life is to marry her daughters off to wealthy men. Jane Bennet: she is the eldest Bennet sister. She is considered the most beautiful young lady in the neighbourhood and is inclined to see only the good in others. She falls in love with Charles Bingley. Mary Bennet: she is the middle Bennet sister, and the plainest of her siblings. Catherine "Kitty" Bennet: she is the fourth Bennet daughter. Although older than Lydia, she is her shadow and follows her in her pursuit of the officers of the militia. Lydia Bennet: she is the youngest Bennet sister. She is frivolous and headstrong. Her main activity in life is socializing, especially flirting with the officers of the militia. This leads to her running off with George Wickham. Charles Bingley: he is a handsome, amiable, wealthy young gentleman from the north of England, who leases Netherfield Park, an estate in Longbourn, with the hopes of purchasing it. Where he meets to Jane Bennet who he falls in love of her. Mr William Collins: he is Mr Bennet's distant second cousin, a clergyman, and the current heir presumptive to his estate of Longbourn House. He is an obsequious and pompous man who is excessively devoted to his patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Lady Catherine de Bourgh: she is Mr Darcy´s aunt and the owner of Rosings Park, where she resides with her daughter Anne and is fawned upon by her rector, Mr Collins. Caroline and Louisa Bingley: they are sisters of Charles Bingley. Caroline harbours designs upon Mr Darcy and Louisa is married to Mr Hurst, who has a house in Grosvenor Square, London. Georgiana Darcy: she is Mr Darcy's quiet, amiable and younger sister. When still 15 Miss Darcy almost eloped with Mr Wickham, but was saved by her brother, whom she idolizes. Mr. Edward Gardiner and Mrs. Gardiner: they are instrumental in bringing about the marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth. Edward Gardiner is Ms Bennet´s brother and Ms Gardiner is Mr Gardiner´s wife.
