I solved the problem ..all i had to do was go to device manager -> under storage controllers selected the "USB Attached SHARE
SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device" which comes up when i connect the drive -> right click and select update driver
software ->browse my computer option -> let me pick ... option -> in the listed drivers i selected mass storage device
and clicked OK. Everything works fine now ..

What happens when you plug it into any OTHER USB port? Can you detect it then? If not, then the ext drive is DOA
most likely. The next test would be to plug it into another different PC / Mac and see if IT can see the drive contents. If
not then you confirmed either the USB 3.0 cord is dead or the drive is.

All the ports are USB 3.0 and the drive was not detected with them too .The other ports are working (i use them for pen-
drives ,mouse etc) ...the external drive works on other PC ....neither the drive nor the cord is dead. The external drive is
ok now, it started working again when i updated the driver as mentioned earlier.

files(x86)\realtek\nicdrv_8169\win8. What should I do?

Thank you so much Roshin, I just followed your instructions and my external hdd is back to being detected. I was
worried when it wasn't detected cause in the past, I read that it was corrupted paths that lead me to do a tiresome copy-
paste mode in a linux OS. Your solution is very easy to follow and the best, my external Seagate 1TB is now detected

The only option listed is 'USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device' on my Win8.1, unless I uncheck 'Show
compatible devices only' When I uncheck it, there is no sign of the Mass storage driver to select. Manually pointing it to
the usbstor.inf does not help either. It states the driver is not for the device. Similar to the OP, I have a Seagate drive, but
it is 4TB.

Any insight on what you guys did to accomplish changing the driver to the USB Mass Storage Device ?

That is the one!

Device Manager

USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device (with Yellow Exclamation Point)

right-click update driver software

browse my computer for driver software

let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

make sure "Show compatible hardware" is checked the only one listed is "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass
Storage Device" click that then next and it will install and you are done.

I'm using Windows 8 and YES that is also the only one that shows on my pc so just click that "USB Attached SCSI

(UAS) Mass Storage Device" then next.

If it's successful good

If not unplug external hdd -> restart pc -> plug again (do check if the hdd light is on/blinking) -> wait for like 2-3mins if
the hdd is detected/installed (if not do the process again).

So you selected the "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device", the update timed out on me....

I had this problem, tried this solution and it didn't work. The drivers would install, but the drive would still not be
recognised.

Then, whilst trying it again, I accidentally disconnected the drive while the drivers were installing. The installation, which
had been taking a while, completed almost immediately.

Lo and behold, when I plugged the drive back in again, Windows recognised it. I then tried this again on another
computer which had the same problem and it worked again. Something about dismounting the drive during the driver
installation and remounting it immediately afterwards seemed to do the trick.
