Crisis and Reputation Management LC51

Effect of Online World in Crisis Management – Session 2

1. Is the case on forum a crisis or a paracrisis? What leads you to that conclusion?

I think this is a paracrisis. A paracrisis is a situation where managers must address a crisis risk in
full view of its stakeholders. Essentially the pre-crisis phase moves from private to public view.
If a paracrisis is mishandled—there is ineffective crisis communication—it can escalate into a
crisis. Social media has had a significant effect on altering the pre-crisis phase of crisis
communication. Burger King’s Twitter got hacked into replaceing logo to McDonalds and a few
threads about Burger King has been sold to McDonalds. Before it becomes a massive headline in
news and TV, we as corporate communication specialist need to fix these hack and inform
people about what is really happening so public can’t go wrong with public opinion that been
made after Burger King’s Twitter got hacked.

2. What would you do next to try to prevent reputational damage from this hack?

- Create cybersecurity policy manual

In order for any security procedure to be properly followed, it should be written down into a
policy manual that staff can read and refer back to often. It should include everything about the
IT security protocols and step by step instructions about what to do if someone has clicked a
phishing link or a breach has been detected.

- Perform a security assessment

What we don’t know can hurt us when it comes to IT security. While we may think that security
is fine, a security assessment can often uncover network vulnerabilities that we didn’t even know
where there. Security assessments by trained IT professionals can give us a helpful roadmap with
areas of focus to strengthen your defense against hackers.

3. Who would you need to contact to complete the actions you identified in your answer to
Question 2?

Of course after the incident, Burger King need to hire a cyber security systems-company. Cisco
has been known by many corporates and organizations that have responsible in securing the
system. Cisco's roots are in networking but by necessity it has expanded into security and
storage. Over the years, it has built up a wide range of security products, including firewalls,
intrusion prevention systems (IPS), UTM, malware protection and cloud protection. It doesn't
particularly shine on Gartner MQs but is rated as a Challenger in secure web gateways and
UTM, and just made it into the Leaders quadrant on NGFW. At the end of 2019, Cisco unveiled
a bold new vision for a new, more secure Internet and a new silicon architecture.
