Stage 1: Ideation

 Idea generation
a) Internal sources from the employees by forming a focus group etc.
b) External resources such as suppliers, customers, distributors and the
competitor products.
c) Brainstorming sessions.
d) Market research.
e) Feedback from the targeted customers and their requirements.
f) Talk to manufactures, suppliers and retailers.
g) Use of SCAMPER model for generating new ideas on the existing product in
the market.

 Idea screening
a) By conducting SWOT analysis.
b) Marketing Potential
c) Profitability
d) Project Feasibility
e) Return of investment
f) Affordability

Stage 2: Concept Analysis

 Product Categorization
 Design Feasibility study
 Manufacturing feasibility
 Benchmark study
 Pre design
 Preliminary BOM
Stage 3: Marketing and Business strategy

 Description of target market

 Product profitability
 Sales review by studying the sales history of similar products and conduct
market surveys.
 Risk analysis
 Sales forecast and market share.
 Pricing strategy

Stage 4: Planning

 Time plan – GANTT chart.

 Vendor Development for manufacturing.
 Sourcing – building of the supply chain.
 Identifying Suppliers.
 Logistic support.
 Resources required.
 Role allocation and responsibilities.

Stage 5: Design

 Detailed BOM
 Design Calculation
 3D model of child parts
 FEA analysis of child parts and assemblies
 DFMEA report (Design Failure mode effective analysis)
 Exploded view
 Tolerance stack up
 Child parts drawings
 Assembly drawings
 Post design review
Stage 6: Development and Testing

 Proto PFD Report(Process Flow Diagram)

 Proto PFMEA Report(Process Failure Mode Effective Analysis)
 Proto Control plan Report
 SOP(Standard operating procedure) for Assembly
 Detailed Test Procedure
 Test rig Design and Development
 Testing in-house and at the customer place.
 Testing report and analysis
 PDI(Pre dispatch Inspection)

Stage 7: Prototype launch

 Prototype released for the customers for their feedback and concerns.
 Improvements made on the product from the feedback and revised version is
developed which when answers the consumer questions will be final version of
the product. Till then the design and development stage repeats.

Stage 8: Production

 Batch productions of the prototype like 250 in no have and see that the same
result is obtained in that batch. Some industries pass the batch into mass
production if an efficiency of more than 90% is achieved.
 Production PFD(Process flow diagram)
 Production PFMEA(Process failure mode effective analysis)
 Production Control plan
 List of frozen vendors
Notes

 A CFT team i.e. Cross Functional Team which comprises members from all the
department will be created for each design project so that at each and every
stage of the product development a person would be there to represent a
concern or ideas towards the product in relation to its department.
 Everyday meeting conducted one at the start of the day and one at the end of
the day where persons responsible for that project gather to discuss the
current status of the project and raise concerns if any.
 ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software in place for operations which
helps in inventory management, vendor managements, payment orders and
delivery challans for the suppliers and vendors.
 Software such as WindChill to be used where all the technical and managerial
documents of the project is uploaded for documentation and future reference.
 Using a software or excel to update the status of the project so that the
information is passed on to each and every department responsible for the
project.
