Geographic indication is a sign used on products that have specific geographic origin and possess
qualities or a reputation that are due to place of origin.
Indigenous and traditional knowledge refers to a living body of knowledge that is developed, sustained
and passed on from many generations within in a community
There are three most important criteria in order to develop GI-label those are Known quality, specific
characteristics and a reputation that is essentially attributable to region or locality from where the goods
originated.
GI- Application allows small producers to create competive advantage from economics of differentiation
and niche marketing

Chang is a Newari liquor origin inside a Newari community which is known for its sweet test and cheaper
price and are found in local part in Newari habitation. Preaparing a high quality chang is a long and
tedious process.
But the Chang brand has been miss used by various other foreign companies and has been selling Chang
in various part of the world. GI- application would create a competitive advantage but patenting the
product under GI which will help small producer to grow in the market. It Nepal local chang is still
untouched in other countries. So there a wide scope for the market and consumer for the chang outside
Nepal.
