“Baldness cure possible as scientists re-grow hair on mice using human stem cells”

By Mark Waghorn and Shivali Best

4
It was nice to learn something new in the science field. Now I know about the benefits of this
research. The skin buds could lead to the development of better drugs for diseases - including
cancer

 New vocabulary

petri dish- is a shallow transparent lidded dish that biologists use to culture cells.
Locks- hair
Graft- a piece of living tissue that is transplanted surgically.
Reconstitute- build up again from parts; reconstruct.
Accelerate- speed up
fork out - to spend money on something, especially when you do not want to

 compulsory sentences to sum up the information

A cure for baldness is on the horizon after scientists grew hair on mice - using human stem cells.
The US team created tiny skin buds, or 'organoids', in a petri dish from the pluripotent stem cells
that can turn into any type of tissue.
When the "remarkably complete" skin was implanted onto the backs of immuno-compromised
bald mice, hair loss was reversed.
Skin is the most difficult organ in the body to mimic because of its complex structures and
texture. Prof Koehler said: "Reconstructing appendage-bearing skin in cultures and in bio-
engineered grafts is a challenge that has yet to be met.”

 Quotations/ Statements/ Opinions worth mentioning

"This achievement places us closer to generating a limitless supply of hair follicles that can be
transplanted to the scalps of people who have thinning or no hair.”

"Moreover, if the approach reaches the clinic, individuals who have wounds, scars and genetic
skin diseases will have access to revolutionary treatments.”

threaten a military response against ‘thugs’ in Minneapolis and quipped: ‘When the looting
starts, the shooting starts.’ In a remarkable first, the social media network flagged the tweet
as ‘glorifying violence’.

 Quotations/ Statements/ Opinions worth mentioning

“The truth is that what happened in Minneapolis, recorded on video and viewed worldwide
through social networks, is just the latest proof that the racism epidemic is far from being
controlled, and that the two Barack Obama administrations did nothing to cauterize any
wounds. On the contrary, they fueled the desire for revenge in many communities, with a deeply
rooted racist culture, which saw its time come in November 2016 with the victory of a far-right
Republican candidate.”
