Lesson 3.

1: Simple Strain

Learning Tasks/Activities (LT #3.1)

LT #3.1: Determine the following using the SMART problem-solving methodology (Use A4
size bond paper).
1. Determine the compressive stress and strain of a circular hollow tube made of steel
that is used to support a compressive load of 150 kN. The inner and outer
diameters of the tube are 9 cm and 12 cm respectively and its length is 2 m. Due
to compressive load, the contraction of the rod is 0.05 mm.
2. Two springs are arrange as shown. If both spring has a free length of 75 𝑚𝑚 where
𝑘1 = 5 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 and 𝑘2 = 15 𝑘𝑁/𝑚, find (a) the total deformation, (b) the energy
stored in each spring, (c) the strain developed in each spring

3. Three springs are arrange as shown. If 𝑘1 = 5 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 has a free length of 𝑙1 =
25 𝑚𝑚, 𝑘2 = 15 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 has a free length of 𝑙2 = 75 𝑚𝑚, and 𝑘3 = 10 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 has a
free length of 𝑙3 = 50 𝑚𝑚 find (a) the average deformation of point A and B, (b) the
energy stored in each spring, (c) the strain developed in each spring, (d) at what
distance from point A that the mass must place in order to have an equal
deformation in point A and B
