Laboratory Exercise No. 2: Universal Joint

Introduction

A universal joint is a positive, mechanical connection between rotating shafts, which

are usually not parallel, but intersecting. They are used to transmit motion, power, or both.
Universal joints are installed in the CWR systems to connect the power output from the speed
reducer instead of direct gear driving, and the mainframe is made of cast steel. Universal joints
with thermoplastic body members are used in light industrial applications in which their self-
lubricating feature, light weight, negligible backlash, corrosion resistance and capability for
high-speed operation are significant advantages.

Results

Using solid works we were able to replicate a universal joint. By creating the parts
individually then combining it, creates a digital model of a universal joint. Using simple
commands that has solid works has to offer can open up a lot of possibilities and shows how
powerful computer applications that we have today.

Conclusions

At the end of the laboratory exercise, I was able to learn the basics of SolidWorks. To
be able to recreate and design a model of a machine serves as a great way of learning. This
activity serves as an example and a guide on how to use solid works and what features and
tools are used. This further teaches how to use the program effectively in our fields and
studies.
