Assignment 4 Chains

1. Can you run a 15-teeth, 2.405 in. pitch diameter sprocket and a 24-teeth, 3.830 in.
pitch diameter sprocket on the same chain?
Solution:
- For the two sprockets to run on the same chain, both of the sprockets must have the
same chain pitch.
Solving for Pitch:
For small sprocket:
p 180
D= → p = D sin
180 T
sin
T
180
p = D sin
T
180
= (2.405) sin

𝐩𝐩 = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟓𝟓 𝐢𝐢𝐢𝐢.
For large sprocket:
180
p = D sin
T
180
= (3.830) sin
24
𝐩𝐩 = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟓𝟓 𝐢𝐢𝐢𝐢.

- Hence, both sprockets can run on the same chain.

2. When the chain and sprocket specs are given and the center distance is to be found,
the following formula is useful:
p 8
C = 2L − N − n + (2L − N − n)2 − 2 (N − n)2
8 π
C = Center distance in inches
p = Pitch of the chain
N = Number of teeth on large sprocket
n = Number of teeth on small sprocket
L = Chain length in pitches

Calculate the center distance for item 1 if the chain length is 50 pitches.

Solution:
p 8
C = 2L − N − n + (2L − N − n)2 − 2 (N − n)2
8 π

0.5 8
= 2(50) − 24 − 15 + (2(50) − 24 − 15)2 − 2 (24 − 15)2

3. From item 1, if the larger sprocket rotates at 460 rpm, determine the maximum and
minimum velocity of the chain.
Solution:
For maximum velocity:
Vmax = πDN
1
= π(3.830 in. ) 460 rpm ×

For minimum velocity:

60 2

𝐕𝐕𝐦𝐦𝐦𝐦𝐦𝐦 = 𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗. 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒

4. From item 1, calculate the center distance using Eq. 1. Compare the answer with item
2.
Solution:
180 180 2
T+t csc  T  − csc  t
Lp = + 2Cp +
2 4Cp
180 180 2
24 + 15 csc  24  − csc  15
50 = + 2Cp + … Solving for Cp
2 4Cp
𝐂𝐂𝐩𝐩 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐩

- Since the center distance of Eq. 1 is still expressed in pitches while in item 2, the
center distance is expressed in inches, hence we still have to multiply the center
distance of Eq. 1 with the value of the chain pitch in order to get the same value of
item 2.

Converting from pitch to inches:

C = Cp × p
0.5 in.
= 15.18 pitches ×
pitch
𝐂𝐂 = 𝟕𝟕. 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 𝐢𝐢𝐢𝐢.
