What is THEME?
● THEME IS
○ The central, underlying, and controlling idea of insight of a work
of literature
○ The idea the writer wishes to convey about the subject-the
writer’s view of the world or a revelation about human nature

How to Identify Theme in 5 Steps
1. Summarize the plot by writing a one-sentence description for the
exposition, the conflict, the rising action, the climax, the falling
action, and the resolution.
2. Identify the subject of the work.
3. Identify the insight or truth that was learned about the subject.
a. How did the protagonist change?
b. What lesson did the protagonist learn from the resolution of the
conflict?
4. State how the plot presents the primary insight or truth about the
subject.
5. Write one or more generalized, declarative sentences that state
what was learned and how it was learned.
What is a Symbol?
● A symbol is a person, place, object, or activity that
stands for something beyond itself.
○ EX: Star on flag stands for a state
○ EX: White dove stands for peace

● A symbol is a CONCRETE NOUN that stands for an


ABSTRACT NOUN
○ EX: Necklace is a symbol for “status, happiness”
How to Identify a Symbol in 5 Steps
1. Identify the Symbol
a. Is a certain object, person, place, or activity described in detail?
2. Think about the symbol in context
a. How does a symbol relate to what is happening in the action?
b. How characters react to a symbol
c. What is the symbol’s history?
3. Trace the symbol
a. Does a symbol appear several times? Each time it appears
should provide more detail and understanding.
4. Use what you know
a. Symbols need deeper meaning from your knowledge and
experience
5. Decide what the symbol means
