Define the problem and Goal

One of the most common problems Barangay face in the Philippines are improper waste
management drainage systems, and Pollution. Improper waste management of Barangays leads
to Soil contamination. Water contamination and Air contamination. Improper segregation of
waste that leads to toxins affecting the soil and water, improperly disposed waste also leads to
the release of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that can severely affect our environment.
Improper waste disposal of Barangay severely affects the surrounding environment. Barangay
tends to incinerate, making an open dumping ground of waste in the streets, and the lack of
garbage cans. The second problem is the drainage system of barangays, drainage problems is
long been faced by the Philippines but until now it is still a main problem. This can lead to floods
even in well elevated places due to drainage systems being connected and leads to rising of
water. The third problem is pollution that includes that areas in land, air and water. The dumping
of waste in an open area without cover or inside a garbage bin can cause air pollution due to
different chemicals and odor being mixed together. Also the decomposition of waste leads to
smell rising up and spreading in the area. Waste that is thrown in water ways severely affects the
nearby area of waters. Three problems will be tackled including problems in drainage systems,
pollution, and waste management.
The most common problems that Barangay face in their area is poor drainage systems.
Poor drainage system leads to flooding and rising of water when a typhoon or heavy rain occurs.
Drainage systems becomes blocked due to improper waste or trash
Being thrown in esteros and canals that manage water when rain or typhoon hits. Other
thing adds up to the problem in drainage includes poorly built drainage systems, drainage
systems that are heavily blocked by trash that is washed away and ending up in the canals, and
esteros. Lastly, is the lack of discipline, people throws their trash in draining systems rather than
keeping it and finding a trash can. Things like poorly built drainage system can lead to blockage
when the drainage system experiences a Fracture or Crack that leads to blocks of cement piling
up and blocking the water ways.
Second problem that barangays face in their area is improper waste management or not
correctly segregating waste in its proper kind. The first negative effects of improper waste
management is Soil contamination, mixing different kind of chemicals like pesticides and heavy
metals can severely damage the soil. The second effect is the water contamination when rain
occurs it mixes with toxic liquid substances and seeps into water streams and ending up in
nearby water bodies. The third problem is air pollution due to the burning of plastics that releases
harmful chemicals in the atmosphere therefore creating a polluted air. Improper waste
management also affects the animals.
Pollutions in barangay caused by waste are becoming a big problem. Areas with little
garbage can may end throwing their trash in an areas where it is open and can easily be accessed
by flies and stray animals like dogs and cats. Leaving trash in areas with no covering ends up
releasing toxins that affects air quality, and can affect animals nearby. This can also make areas
of soil infertile therefore unable to sustain vegetation. Improper waste management can also
release chemicals that can seep through the soil and reach areas of waters. This problem all adds
up due to waste not being handled properly.

II. Goal
This research papers introduces the possible solutions and answer to help barangays attain a
much cleaner and environmentally aware citizens. This includes solutions to further help other
barangays in facing problems like waste management. This paper includes researches that can
help the environment of barangays attain a much cleaner environment. This gives the people who
manage the barangay a much clearer picture when tackling a waste problem. It also gives the
citizen of the barangay the knowledge when it comes to helping the barangay when it comes to
waste management. A lot of citizen doesn’t have the knowhow when it comes to segregating
trash, what not to mix or what not bury in the ground. This includes the mistakes when
composting or just about burying any waste you generate. The goal of this paper is to give the
citizens or any other organization the knowhow or the knowledge to help a barangay when it
comes to waste management. It also gives the people in the barangay the knowledge what is the
best solution when tackling the waste management problem. This paper also gives the citizen of
the barangay the knowledge to past to the future generations when faced with the same problems
their older generation faced in the past.
A lot of barangay faced problem that includes waste management, this paper gives the
citizen what the problem is and how to fix the problem. Particularly, a lot of citizen does not
have an idea of what their barangay is currently facing and how to tackle the problem. This
guides the citizen on what small steps they can take to help their environment by properly
segregating waste, properly using a decomposing pit and practicing recycling materials and
throwing trash where it should be thrown by this little steps we can have a more environmentally
aware citizen.
