CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In a literary works, there are many kinds of genre. Generally, genre

is a category of an artistic composition in literature or other from of art or

entertainment that based on certain defining criteria. The most generous

classification of genre are fiction and nonfiction. These genres have its

own particular features and functions that distinguished them from one to

another.

Nonfiction is a literary works that created based on facts and

reality. There are some types of nonfiction such as biographies, essays,

journalism, historical, scientific, memoirs, technical, or economic writings.

On the other hand, fiction is a literary works that created based on the

author's imagination. It refers that, the author has a skill to form an image

of something which not present to the senses or never can be percieved in

reality. There are three main types of fiction, the first one is short story,

the novella, and the novel. In the novel, there are many kind of genres, the

major types to define these genres are, fantasy, science fiction, western,

romance, thriller, mystery, detective story, and dystopia.

As the time goes by, genre can be easily influenced by other

aspect. For example, in Apocalypse novel by Tim Bowler, this novel is

defined as thriller genre, or more be precise as psychological thriller or

psycho thriller genre. Psychological thriller genre is a combination

between psychological and thriller. In this kind of genre, it contains of the

relationship between human psychological thoughts with thrilling moment

which happen inside the story, anxiety and paranoia disorder are often to

be seen in this kind of genre.

In Apocalypse novel by Tim Bowler, the main character should be

able to overcome his fears in order to find his parents, in this story, a lot of

thrilling things happen, such as he heard an unearthly moaning, saw a man

that really looks like him, etc. For instance, in this study, a novel

Apocalypse by Tim Bowler is going to be explore to find the

psychological thriller or psycho-thriller events that happen inside the

novel.

1.2 Statements of the Problem

There are many psycho-thriller events that shown in indirect ways, in this

study the points that going to be explore are :

1. What kinds of suspense that Kit have been through?

2. How did the author presenting the fear and suspense events in the

novel?

1.3 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this study is exploring the fear and anxiety to drive

the psychological tension in novel Apocalypse by Tim Bowler. This study

is only focused on the main character, Kit.

1.4 Goals of the Study

Based on the statements of the problem above, the goals of this study are :

1. To define the suspense that Kit have been through inside the novel

Apocalypse by Tim Bowler.

2. To reveal the author's ways when presenting the fear and suspense

events inside the novel Apocalypse by Tim Bowler.

1.5 Functions of the Study

The function of this study are :

1. For the writer, this study will improve the knowledge about

psychological thriller that contain in novel Apocalypse.

2. As a reference, this study will provide as a resource for a further

research with the same topic.

1.6 Systematical Presentation

To make the reader understand, this study is divided into 5

chapters. Chapter I is introducing, which consists of background of the

study start from general information to more specific information,

statements of the problem, scope and limitation, goals and the function of

the study. Chapter II are contains of related studies, review of literature,

and theoretical frameworks. Chapter III are research methodology, this

chapter describe the approach of the study, data source, technique of

collecting the data, and method of data analysis. On chapter IV, it is

contain of the main point of the study, this chapter describe the material,

activities, and analyze the result of the research. And the last is chapter V,

this chapter are consists of conclusion and suggestion.
