B. Then, retell briefly the legend in your own words. Start the story by following the
generic structures of a narrative text (orientation complication resolution coda).
In ancient times, in a small village in Japan. Live as a married couple who are old.
They are not blessed with a child. One day when the husband was climbing a hill to find
firewood. His wife went to the river to wash clothes. Suddenly he found a large peach.
She brought peaches to eat with her husband.
When the peach is placed on the dining table. The peach cut open the baby boy. They
then took care of him and were given the name Momotaro. The villagers were always
harassed by the oni. oni stole the property of the villagers. Oni live on an island. When
Momotaro was a teenager, he went to Oni Island to recover the villagers' treasure.
Momotaro asked his mother for millet cake as a lunch.
On the way he made friends with dogs, monkeys and pheasents. Momotaro gave them
millet cake. When they arrived at Oni Island. They work together against the oni. Until
only the oni king remained. Momotaro asked the oni king to return the villagers'
property.
And so Momotaro took all the riches back to the village. The village was never again
bothered by the oni. And Momotaro and the old man and the old woman lived in peace
and plenty for the rest of their lives.
C. Answer the following questions.
1. What is the purpose of the legend? To tell reader about journey Momotaro to oni
Island with his animal friends.
2. Who are the characters of the story? Old man and his wife, Momotaro, dog, monkey,
pheasant, oni, and village.
3. Where and when did they live? In a small village in the country of Japan once upon a
time.
4. What is the conflict of the legend? Is it external or internal conflict? External,
because the conflict is for many years the villagers had been bothered by the oni, who
were greedy monsters who stole things from the villagers.
5. What did the main character do to overcome the problem? Momotaro will go to oni
island to stop the oni stolen the village and bring back what oni stolen from his
village.
6. What is the theme of the legend? Journey, Supernatural, and bravery.
7. What is the point of view used in the story? Point of view author.
8. What can you learn from the story? Brave to fight something that bothers us.
