1. Description
Our Heaters are primarily installed for the purpose of heating fuel oil and lubricating oil,
diesel oil, water system built as tubular heat exchanger.
Heater basically consists of a carbon steel pipe shell, channel cover which is steel fabricated.
Carbon steel tubes are generally used as tube material and carbon steel plates are used for sheet
material in commercial vessel.
The construction of shell & U-tube type Heater is as bellows.
(1) Shell & Shell head : The shell has the shell head of steel fabrication.
(2) Tube bundle & baffle plate : As the shell side fluid to ward heat pipe can be flowed most
validly, the thermal efficiency of heat exchanger is become higher.
(3) Insulation : shell and channel cover in glass wool insulated with galvanizes steel sheet.
2. Installation.
The removal space for U-tube bundle and channel cover should considered according to the
out line drawing.
The foundation must have high rigidity in view of loading condition and external force
and be as strong as not to receive any alteration due to aged deterioration
3. Operation
(1) Before start-up it is important to make sure that all connections are securely tightened.
(2) The relief(safety) valve must be adjusted to maximum design pressure or low.
(3) Oil(water) inlet and outlet valve should be open.
(4) Operate the oil pump : Alter confirming the pump discharge press, Is proper, fully open the
oil pump discharge valve gradually.
(5) Open the air vent valve of confirm oil comes out.
(6) Operate the oil pump with checking the steam control calve and oil viscosity controller,
oil filter purifier.
Starting Up
- Oil(water) pump start.
- Pressure pulsation and vibration check oil side.
- Leakage check during oil(water) side start up.
- Ventilate oil(water).
- Ventilation and drain on the steam, condensate side.(shipyard installation line)
- Open slowly steam valve.
- Pressure rise and change of temperature check.
- Leakage check curing running steam, condensate side.
- when slight steam can be over serve on the ventilation.
close ventilation on the steam side shipyard installation line)
a. Fluid flow through the heat exchanger must be established before the heating medium is
applied.
b. Operate the heater for one hour stop and retighten all screws.
c. The output of the heater is subject to the supply of dry saturated steam at the inlet steam
valve. The steam pressure applied to be as basis heater size calculation.
Shut-down
- Close steam valve.
- Oil(water) recirculate for about 30 minutes after shutdown.
- Oil(water) Pump shut-down.
- Open ventilation (shipyard's connecting pipes.)
- Open drain valve.
a. In stopping operation, take the step reverse to starting of operation, that means, stop
steam flow before stopping the flow of heater oil(water).
Heated oil is to be flowed for about 30 minutes after shutdown steam.
In order to completely cool down the heater.
b. Corrosion occurrences in shut down periods are mainly caused by oxygen.
The corrosion occurs if non-distilled or alkaline water remains in the heat exchanger.
However, even when fully emptied, heaters are exposed to corrosion,
caused by water residues or condition.
Hence, heaters out of service should be protected against corrosion.
Maintenance check is to carried out with care paying keen attention on the following.
(1) The heater should be clean₩ed regularly every six months by removing the tube insert or at
any tome there is a decrease in output not related to other causes.
(2) If heating tube should break or when it is necessary to check for leakages of water from
loosen expanded area the following procedures are recommended.
a. Cleaning of the tube system from the outside is carried out after removing the tube insert
using a sharp liquid jet (citric acid water).
b. Cleaning of the tube system from the inside is carried out after removing the cover by
flushing the tube with e.g. citric acid.
c. after cleaning has been completed the heater must be flushed carefully with fresh water and
allowed to dry afterwards.
(4) Once every year the safety valve must be checked for correct set point.
In this heater it is important to pay attention to the following items for maintenance and inspection
of each part during the operation.
Temperature or pressure Record heating steam pressure at inlet regularly and pay attention to the
of heating steam relation to heated temperature.
Air venting of shell Open the air vent valve a little and check if air stays in the shell
INSPECTION
ITEM INSPECTING PROCEDURE
PERIOD
Chemical cleaning Every 1year For details, refer to "Tube bundle Cleaning"
Oil heater can exhibit satisfactory performance if properly handled and maintained.
Should trouble occur speedy remedies must be taken.
B-1.2 FOUNDATIONS
Foundations must be adequate so that exchangers will not settle and impose
excessive strains on the exchanger. Foundation bolts should be set to allow for
setting inaccurancecies. In concrete footings, pipe sleeves at least one size larger
than bolt diameter slipped over the bolt and cast in place are best for this purpose,
as they allow the bolt center to be adjustedafter the foundation has set.
B-1.4 LEVELING
Exchangers must be set level and square so that pipe connections may be
made without forcing.
B-3.3 VENTS
Vent valves should be provided by purchaser so units can be purged to prevent
vapor or gas binding. Special consideration must be given to discharge of
hazardous or toxic fluids.
B-3.4 DRAINS
Drains may discharge to atmosphere, if permissible, or into a vessel at lower pressure.
They should not be piped to a common closed manifold.
FIGURE C-1
Before disassembly, the user must assure himself that the unit has been de-
pressurized, vented and drained, neutralized and/or purged of hazardous material.
To inspect the inside of the tubes and also make them accessible for cleaning,
the following procedures should be used:
(1) Stationary Head End
(a) Type A, C, D & N, remove cover only
(b) Type B, remove bonnet
(2) Rear Head End
(a) Type L, N & P, remove cover only
(b) Type M, remove bonnet
(c) Type S & T, remove shell cover and floating head cover
(d) Type W, remove channel cover or bonnet
(1) Units with removable channel cover : Remove channel cover and apply
hydraulic pressure in the shell.
(2) Units with bonnet type head : For fixed tubesheet units where tubesheets
are an integral part of the shell, remove bonnet and apply hydraulic
pressure in the shell. For fixed tubesheet units where tubesheets are
not an integral part of the shell and for units with removable bundles,
remove bonnet, re-bolt tubesheet to shell or install test flange or gland,
whichever is applicable, and apply hydraulic pressure in the shell.
See Figure D-1 for typical test flange and test gland.
(3) Units with Type S or T floating head : Remove channel cover or bonnet,
shell cover and floatng head cover. Install test ring and bolt in place
with gasket and packing. Apply hydraulic pressure in the shell.
A typical test ring is shown in figure D-2. When a test ring is
not available it is possible to locate leaks in the floating head end by
removing the shell cover and applying hydraulic pressure in the tubes.
Leaking tube joints may then be located by sighting through the tube lanes.
Care must be exercised when testing partiallyassembled exchangers
to prevent over extension of expansion joints or overloading of tubes
and/or tube-to tubesheet joints.
FIGURE D-1
(4) Hydrostatic test should be performed so that the temperature of the metal
is over 60℉ (16℃) unless the materials of construction have a lower
nil-ductility transition temperature.
FIGURE D-2
Metal jaketed type gaskets are widely used. When these are used with a tongue
and groove joint without a nubbin, the gasket should be installed so that the
tongue bears on the seamless side of the gasket jacket.
When a nubbin is used, the nubbin should bear on the seamless side.
1. Operating Procedures
1. OP1) Cooling side
(1) Manipulate the valve so that each fluid will flow a gradual manner.
(2) Keep the air vent under the ever-slightly-opened condition. Care should be taken so as
not to let the air gather in the water channel or tube inside,
(3) Check with the flow mater if furnished so that the rate will not exceed the designed valve.
(4) Record periodically the inlet and outlet temperatures, pressure, and flow of each fluid.
(5) For the flow control, use the outlet valve. Do no use inlet valve for this purpose.
Keep the inlet valve constantly full open.
2. Cleaning Procedure
Cleaning shall be carried out when the following phenomena are found.
- In case the scale is found on the inside or outlet surface of tubes by checking, when the
required temperature can not be obtained.
- In case the scale in found on the inside or outside surface of tube by checking on the
other case. Overhauling shall be carried out every one year.
1) Inspection
When checking the tube inside surface, as to the tube side, take off the
channel or cover.
As to the shell side, when checking the tube outside surface, take off the piping.
2) Cleaning of shell side
(1) Draw out tube bundle from shell assembly if removable type.
(2) If fouled condition is moderate. It is possible to clean out with steam jet or cleaning
solvent at the site.
(3) If fouled condition is severe. It is preferable to contact and discuss manufacturer or
special rinsed with clean fresh water.
3. Repair Procedure
3.1 TUBE LEAKAGE
In the following cases, there might be a leakage from tube.
So please check by the pressure test.
(1) Extraordinary decrease or increase of the fluid.
(2) When the cooling fluid outlet temperature rises too high comparing with normal valve.
(3) When the shell inside fives an extraordinary sound.
If a leakage from the tube is observed, repair the tube in the following procedures.
(1) Leakage from the expanded part.
Re-expand the tube with an expand tool. Of the leakage dose not stop in spite of expansion,
plug up the tube or renew it.
(2) When the tube is corroded or damaged to cause leakage, renew the tube or plug it up.
