Conceptual Phase

Indian Railways has undertaken a mega-project to construct a new railway line in the province.
Kashmir and Jammu, from Udhampur to Baramulla. The Government of India has acknowledged
an urgent need to have better transport facilities. Therefore, it was proposed to construct a
national railway project that would link J&K with the rest of India. The alignment crosses the
Chenab River's deep gorge, requiring the construction of a long-span bridge.

2. Technical Phase

The bridge, with a central span of 467 metres, is being constructed at an altitude of 359 metres.
From the level of the bed. This is the tallest and best built railway bridge in the world. The
bridge has a wind speed of 266 kmph. This makes the Chenab bridge the tallest railway bridge in
the world. In the Indian broad gauge railway network, the bridge with the broadest span. The
plan involves building several bridges and tunnels along the road, one of which is the Chenab
Bridge. It will span across the deep Chenab river and provide access from Udhampur to the
Kashmir valley.

3. Execution Phase

As part of the proposal, the project was launched in 2003. In August 2004, the original work
began. The construction work of the Chenab River Railway Bridge has accelerated over the last
year and is scheduled to be completed by December 2022. The central span of the bridge is 4677.
Meters and 359 metres in height with a maximum of 266 kmph. The building work is supervised
by the central government's top echelons. At present, the 111km katra- bahinhal is being
executed.

4. Termination Phase

Originally, the Chenab Bridge was designed to be completed in December 2009. However, the
project was halted in September 2008 due to concerns over the integrity and safety of the bridge.
The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2022 and will have a 120-year lifespan. It
will contribute to the state's economic growth and help provide greater connectivity to
transportation within the state and the world.
