Chapter 3 - Organic Compounds – Part II

In this lesson we will:

• Simply name alkanes and their isomers.

Review

1
Naming Alkanes

First let’s go through the simplest of scenarios, straight chain alkanes. Straight-chain” alkanes
have a zig-zag orientation when they are in their most straight orientation, and they are also
called unbranched alkanes.

2
When hydrocarbon chains have branches is when rules need to be followed. Let’s call the main
part of the chain (straight part) the parent, and the branches (alkyl groups) branching off the
substitutents (prefix).

Thus, we will follow the following rule:

Prefix-Location-Parent-Suffix
What is a prefix? What is a location? What is the parent again? What is a suffix?

Example:

3
Focusing on alkanes, here are the IUPAC rules to be followed when branching occurs:

4
IUPAC vs systematic naming.

Based on this, name the molecules presented in class both with IUPAC names and systematic
names, if possible.
