PRE-ASSESSMENT
__T__ 1.) Individual and Dual Sports are sports played by 1 and 2 perons.
__F__ 5.) An athletic person is the only one allowed to play certain type of sport.
1.) Golf
Individual Sports
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a
series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible.
2.) Running
Individual Sports
Running is a method of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to
move rapidly on foot. This is in contrast to walking, where one foot is always in
contact with the ground, the legs are kept mostly straight and the center of gravity
vaults over the stance leg or legs in an inverted pendulum fashion.
3.) Baseball
Team Sports
Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns
batting and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called
the pitcher, throws a ball which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat.
The objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball into the field of
play, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance counter-clockwise
around four bases to score what are called "runs".
4.) Table Tennis
Dual Sports
Table tennis, also called (trademark) Ping-Pong, ball game similar in principle to
lawn tennis and played on a flat table divided into two equal courts by a net fixed
across its width at the middle. The object is to hit the ball so that it goes over the net
and bounces on the opponent’s half of the table in such a way that the opponent
cannot reach it or return it correctly.
5.) Volleyball
Team Sports
Volleyball is a game for two teams, usually of six players, in which a large ball is hit
by hand over a high net, the aim being to score points by making the ball reach the
ground on the opponent's side of the court.
6.) Basketball
Team Sports
Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are
scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court.
7.) Tennis
Dual Sports
Reflection
It seems that it is just like an ordinary activity but, it also gives us a hint or knowledge
whether a sport is for individual (meaning it can execute just by only one person), dual or team
sports. In addition, by just looking on their uniforms and activity tools (i.e. ball for basketball,
badminton racket for badminton), we can fully distinguish what kind of sport they’re interested
to.
This activity can be a big help in our everyday living, especially in this time of pandemic
because it is undeniably that this activity encourages its readers, specifically the students to
engage in physical sports. In this time of pandemic, it is very limited to engage in physical sports
since it is very usual to execute such sport outside of our houses. By this activity, even though
we are in quarantine and have very limited activities outdoors, encouragement in engaging
physical activities indoors is very much noticeable in this activity.
Uniqueness is also shown in this activity. Engaging in different sports is unique because
not everyone is physically capable to execute such activities. In addition, engaging in less
popular kind of sports does not make any type or king of sports inferior or superior for one
another. For example, in an all boys school, liking or interested in mental sports such as chess
and sci-dama doesn’t make that sport inferior just because the popular physical sport on that
certain school is basketball. Reflecting from this activity, I think that all sports are co-equal to
each other. It is just a matter of how you will handle or execute a sport, and also, no stratification
of sports should be visible in treating it.
According to one article by Jain Heritage School (2017), sports are a crucial part of a
student’s growth and development, which is very truthful. It serves as one of the main way on
how to develop our mental and physical health properly. Through participation in sports and
games, a student gains various skills, experience and confidence that are helpful for developing
their personality. With this activity, I can say that we can develop such needs in engaging
physical and mental health.
ASSIGNMENT
Like most other sports, table tennis had humble beginnings as a “parlor game,” open to
anyone with access to a table, paddle, and ball. The game began in the 1880s, when lawn tennis
players adapted their game to play indoors during the winter.
Ping-Pong is a trademark name for table tennis and associated equipment. The name
“Ping-Pong” was invented by the English firm J. Jaques and Son at the end of the 1800s and later
trademarked in the United States by Parker Brothers, the board game company.
The game quickly caught on, and as early as 1901, tournaments were being conducted
with over 300 participants. The Ping-Pong Association was formed but was renamed The Table
Tennis Association in 1922.
In 1902 a visiting Japanese university professor took the game back to Japan, where he
introduced it to university students. Shortly after, a British salesman, Edward Shires, introduced
it to the people of Vienna and Budapest, and the seeds were sown for a sport that now enjoys
popularity all over the world. In Britain, table tennis had also begun to spread outside the
distinctly middle-class confines of London, and leagues sprang up in provincial towns as far
apart as Sunderland and Plymouth. In 1922, an All England Club was formed, which boasted
such luminaries as Jack Hobbs the cricketer and other famous names of the time from the world
of sport. The Daily Mirror organized and sponsored a nationwide tournament in which there
were 40,000 competitors.
Table tennis was firmly on the map, and on April 24, 1927, the English Table Tennis
Association was born, under the chairmanship and direction of Ivor Montague, son of Lord
Ewatthling. He was not only to become the architect of modern-day table tennis, but he also
achieved critical acclaim as both a director and film producer. At the time, The ETTA had a
membership of 19 leagues but now has over 300, with around 75,000 registered players.
The first world championships were held in 1927 and were won by a Hungarian, Dr.
Jacobi. Apart from the famous Fred Perry redressing the balance for England in 1929, this was to
be the start of an unprecedented run of success for the Hungarians, who completely dominated
the game throughout the thirties. Their team was led by the legendary Victor Barna, whose
inspiration and skill did so much to elevate the game to sports status.
Until this time, spin had played only a minor part in a game that had been dominated by
the defensive style of play. But these new bats or paddles, introduced by the Japanese, had the
capacity to move the ball around in an almost magical way. The ITTF, the game’s governing
body, was quick to legislate in a bid to control this new development, seen in some quarters as
equipping players with an unfair advantage. The thickness of the sponge and rubber sandwich
was controlled and remains so to this day. But the nature of the game had been changed,
establishing the fast attacking speed and spin style of the modern game.
Today, the sport both in England and abroad is very well established and is growing each
year. The culmination of this has been its recognition as an Olympic Games sport, being featured
for the first time in the 1988 games in Seoul. Television coverage of the men’s singles final
attracted an incredible worldwide audience of 2 billion. In China, the game is played by literally
millions at work, in school, and in community parks. Chinese top players are regarded as
national heroes with pop star statuses.
Ball
o The ball that is used in the game is a 2.7 gram, small celluloid ball that is
usually colored white or orange depending on the preference of the players.
They can come in different qualities with those possessing 3 stars being the
best kind and is often recommended especially to those who are just starting
up.
o The racket is usually made of wood and rubber and is divided into two parts:
the handle and the blade. The quality of both of the parts of the racket can
affect the force that can be applied by the player and it is important the player
choose the best kind of rackets in order to really improve.
o Included in the list of important table tennis equipment is the table where the
game is to be played. The ITTF specifies that the official table tennis tables
that are used in the tournament must be 9 ft long, 5 ft wide and must be placed
30 inches high from the ground.
o They come in either green, blue or black in color and are usually made from a
type of hardboard. The surface must be smooth as to provide the lowest
friction as possible.
o The net which is the last piece of important equipment is usually brought
together with the table or with the rackets or it can be bought by itself.
o Whatever the case, it should be six feet long and six inches wide and has an
upper white tape that is not more than 15mm wide. Also, it should include an
assembly so that it can be attached to the middle of the table tennis table.
Definition of Terms
o Penhold Grip
The Penhold grip is mostly used in Asia. It is the second most popular
grip in table tennis.
So, how you can hold a paddle with the Penhold grip is, encircle the
blade of the paddle with your thumb and index finger. Then you can
weather curl or flat your other three fingers across the backend of the
paddle. It will make your paddle face down as like holding a pen or
pencil while writing.
o Shakehand Grip
The Shakehand grip is also known as the western grip. Because most
of the European and American players prefer the Shakehand grip.
Some Asians also start liking this grip.
So how you can hold the paddle with Shakehand grip is, put your
index finger on the rubber of your backend paddle. Then hold the
blade with the rest of your fingers including thumb. It will make a V
shape with your wrist and the paddle.
Service. Striking the ball so that it first touches your side of the table and then
passing over or round the net, bounces on the opponent's side of the table.
Strike Drives
A backhand shot involves turning your arm slightly across your body
to hit the ball.
The backhand can also be broken down into four components – your
stance, the backswing, the strike and the finish.
A forehand shot is essentially hitting the ball with your hand’s most
natural position. For instance, a right-hander would hit the ball from
the right side of his body, while a left-hander would hit from the left
side.
