CIE 515: ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Fall 2020

HOMEWORK 1
Problem 1: (12 pts) What is degree of kinematic indeterminacy for the 2D trusses in
a and b, and the 2D frames in c and d? Mark the minimum number of required dofs to
solve the problem on the structures in global coordinates.

A
a b

Y B

X
= hinge
A
= spring

c d

For members between nodes A, B in part a and c, mark the local dof’s. (Indicate the start
(i) and end (j) nodes and the local coordinate system you selected)

Problem 2: For the truss given below, all members have rectangular cross sections. Cross
sections are 6 in. deep and 4 in. wide. All members have E = 1000 ksi. There is no joint where
member AC and BD intersect. All other joints are hinges. Use the minimum number of degrees
of freedom required to solve the problem.

a) (5 pts) Identify the unknown displacements. When numbering the degrees of freedom,
follow this order of joints: A, D, C, B. At each joint, where there is an unknown dof,
number them in this order: X direction and Y direction, and move on to the next joint.
b) (45 pts) Find all unknown joint displacements.
c) (20 pts) Find all members forces in local and global coordinates. Draw free body
diagrams of all members. Indicate if they are in tension or compression. Check to make
sure each joint is in static equilibrium.
d) (10 pts) Calculate all support reaction forces. Draw the free body diagram of the
structure.
e) (8 pts) Sketch the deflected shape.
