Survey of Biofuel Species in selected areas of Mysore using GPS

ABSTRACT
Diesel (Petroleum) sources are diminishing with time. There exists no energy
security to replace crude oil. Biofuels which is produced from biofuel seeds,
vegetable oil or animal fat can serve as an alternative fuel. The Biodiesel has a
great potential for replacing Diesel in Compression–Ignition Engines.
Biodiesel is produced from the trans-esterification of long chain fatty acids oil.
Waste cooking oil (WCO) and biofuel seeds serve as a potential feedstock for
the biodiesel production.
The present project involves the mapping of biofuel plantations in the Mysore
region using GPS technology. Data of the biofuel plantations planted by the
Forest department around Mysore region under various schemes in the year of
2018-2019 in places like Mariyanahundi, Basallihundi, Kadanahalligudda and
Maddurkere are obtained. This serve to be potential feedstock of biofuel seeds
in the next 6-7 years. Data includes types of species planted ,no of saplings,
type of plantation etc and coordinates of the location are determined using
GPS.
Typical Civil Engineering surveys involve mapping for roads, canals or any
civil structures, our project is unique as it involves assessment of biofuel
potential as there are only few works are done in mapping of biofuel
plantations . The project details or data can serve as a tool to Government
agencies or NGOs or industries involved in dissemination of biofuels and
create a plan to harvest biofuels from existing plantations where harvesting is
not being done and potentially used for the biodiesel production .
