MATHEMATICS 8

Topic: Special Products

Lesson Proper:
Polynomials with Common Monomial Factor

a ( b+ c )=ab+ ac
 This is done by multiplying the monomial factor in each term inside the parenthesis.
EXAMPLE:
(a) 3 ( x+ y )=3 x+ 3 y
(b) 2 ( 3 x + 4 y +2 z ) =( 2∙ 3 x+2 ∙ 4 y +2 ∙ 2 z )=6 x +8 y +4 z
TRY THIS!
(a) 6 ( x +2 y )=¿
(b) 4 ( a2 +5 b−3 c )=¿

SQUARE OF A BINOMIAL
Addition: ( a+ b )2=( a+ b ) ( a+b )=a2 +2 ab+ b2
Subtraction: ( a−b )2 =( a−b ) ( a−b )=a 2−2 ab+b 2
STEPS:
The square of a binomial consists of:
a) the square the first term ( x 2 );
b) twice the product of the first and last terms (2 xy); and
c) the square of the last term ( y 2 ).
EXAMPLE:
(a) ( x +2 )2

First Term the square the first term x2

Second Term twice the product of the first and last terms 2 ( x ) ( 2 )=4 x
Last Term the square of the last term 22=4
Final Answer: x 2+ 4 x +4

(b) ( y−5 )2

First Term the square the first term y2

Second Term twice the product of the first and last terms 2 ( y )(−5 )=−10 y
Last Term the square of the last term (−5)2=25
Final Answer: y 2−10 y +25

(a) the sum of the squares of the first, second, and last terms (a ¿ ¿ 2+ b2 +c 2)¿;
(b) twice the product of the first and second terms (2 ab);
(c) twice the product of first and last terms (2 ac); and
(d) twice the product of second and last terms(2 cb).
EXAMPLE:
(a) ( e +2 a+q )2

First Term the square the first term e2

Second Term the square the second term ( 2 a )2=4 a2
Third Term the square the last term q2
twice the product of the first and second

terms
Fifth Term twice the product of first and last terms 2 ( e )( q )=2 eq
Last Term twice the product of second and last terms 2 ( 2 a )( q )=4 aq
Final Answer: e 2+ 4 a2+ q2 + 4 ae+ 2 eq+4 aq

(a) ( r −t+n )2

First Term the square the first term r2

Second Term the square the second term (−t )2=t 2
Third Term the square the last term n2

DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES

( a+ b ) ( a−b )=a 2−b2
 This is done by subtracting the square of the first term and the last term
EXAMPLE:
(a) ( w−6 )( w +6 ) =w2−36
(b) ( 4 y−5 d ) ( 4 y +5 d )=16 y2 −25 d 2
