Lesson Proper:
LAWS OF EXPONENTS
1. Power Law
According to the product law of exponents when multiplying two numbers that have the same base then
we can add the exponents
EXAMPLE:
(a) 23 ∙24 =23+ 4=27 (b) x 5 ∙ x 3=x 5+3=x 8
TRY THIS!
(a) y 5 ∙ y 7 =¿ (b) (−6)4 ∙ (−6 )7 =¿-611
2. Quotient Law
am m−n
n
=a
a
According to the quotient law of exponents, we can divide two numbers with the same base by
subtracting the exponents.
In order to divide two exponents that have the same base, subtract the power in the denominator
from the power in the numerator.
EXAMPLE:
5 3 5−3 2 p2 2−6 −4 4
(a) 2 ÷2 =2 =2 (b) 6
=p = p =1/ p
p
TRY THIS!
g5 3
(a) y7 ÷ y5 = y2 (b) 2
=g

According to the power law of exponents if a number raise a power to a power, just multiply the
exponents.
EXAMPLE:
2 3
(a) ( 23 ) =23∙ 2=26 (b) ( x 4 ) =x 4 ∙3= x12
TRY THIS:
4 7
(a) ( 56 ) =¿ ¿ (b) ( z 3 ) =¿ ¿
1
positive exponent or −n
=a+n
a
For example:
1
=x−2 a−3=
1 1 x2
(a) 2 (b) =
x a3 2 x−2 2
2) a 0=1
This says that anything raised to the zero power is 1.
For example:
0
(a) 50 =1 (b) ( 1000 )0=1 ( 3 x 2 ) =1
(b) 5 x 0 y 3= (5 )( 1 ) ( y 3 )=5 y 3
3) a 1=a
1
( 5 x 0 y 3 z ) =5 y 3 z
4) Power of Product
For example:
(a) ( 2 x 5 )10=210 ×510 incorrect: ( a ± b )m =(a m ± b m)
5) Power of Quotient
For example:
2 12
212 ( a ±b )m (a m ± bm )
(a) () 5
=
512
incorrect: m
= m m
( a ±b ) (a ± b )
