Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

I
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
Read each question carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer in your activity notebook.
5. What do you call a statement that has become a rule because it has been proven to be
true?

is It
In this module you will learn about the parts of a mathematical system. A
Mathematical System consist of undefined terms such as point, line and plane, defined
terms which are statements that explains the meaning of the concepts, postulates/axioms
which are statements that are accepted true without proof and theorems which statement that
can be proven.
Examples:
Let’s Explore!
Undefined terms:
Point - represented by a dot. Has no length, width, or thickness, occupies no space. A point is
named using a CAPITAL LETTER and can be represented by a dot. All geometric figures are
made up of a collection of points.
Line - straight mark with arrow heads. Have infinite length but no width and thickness. It is
named by a single lower case script letter or by two points on a line (two CAPITAL
LETTERS).
3 NegOr_Q3_Mathematics8_Module1_v2
Plane – a flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions. It has length and width but no
thickness. It is named by a single script CAPITAL LETTER or by any three points in the
plane which are not on the same line.
Definition (Defined Term) – is a statement that clarifies or explains the meaning
of a word or a phrase.
The four characteristics of a good definition:
It places the term into a set or category.
(An angle bisector is a segment, line or ray that divides the angle equally)
It names the term being defined.
It distinguishes itself from other terms in that category.
(Midpoint is a point on a line segment that divides it into two equal parts)
It is reversible.
(If a triangle is equilateral, then all sides are equal)
(If all sides of a triangle are equal, then it is equilateral triangle)
