Lesson 1: Differentiating Linear Inequalities in Two Variables from
Linear Equations in Two Variables

Read the scenario below to answer the questions that follow.

Leni is given by her mother 500 pesos to buy apples and oranges.
She makes sure that the bags of fruits would be good for 5 people.
The cost of each fruit is 25 pesos.

QUESTIONS:
1. How will Leni estimate the number of apples and oranges she will buy?
2. Is the money given to Leni enough to buy all the fruits for 5 people?
Justify your answer. Suppose Leni does not know yet the cost of each
fruit, how will she represent this algebraically?

What is the difference between Linear Equations and Linear

Inequalities?
Linear equations in two variables use the equal symbol (=). These equations
can be written in the form Ax + By = C where A, B, and C are real numbers
and A and B are both not equal to zero.
Example 1: 2x + y = 6
Linear inequalities in two variables use greater than (>), less than (<), greater
than or equal to (≥) or less than or equal to (≤). These are inequalities that can
be written as Ax + By < C, Ax + By ≥ C, Ax + By < C, or Ax + By ≤ C where A,
B, and C are real numbers and A and B are both not equal to zero.
Examples 2: 2x + y > 6
2x + y < 6
2x + y ≥ 6
2x + y ≤ 6
In this aspect, a linear equation has only 1 solution while linear
inequalities can have more than 1 solutions.

Linear Equation
2x + y = 4
If x = 0 If y = 0,
2(0) + y = 4 2x + 0 = 4
0+y=4 2x = 4
y=4 x=2
Conclusion: The value of y is 4 and the value of x is 2.
Linear Inequality
2x + y > 4
If x = 0 If y = 0,
2(0) + y > 4 2x + 0 > 4
0+y>4 2x > 4
y>4 x >2
Conclusion: The value of y is greater than 4 and the value of x is greater
than 2.
Possible values of y: {5,6, 7…}
Possible values of x: {3,4, 5…}

A. Write LE in the spaces provided below if the mathematical statement is

a linear equation and LI if it is a linear inequality.

_____ 1. The sum of x and twice the variable y is less than 7

_____ 4. Seven times the variable x minus thrice the variable y is less than
or equal to 10

Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.

Maria is a data encoder. The graph shows the number of pages she
was able to encode in the first 15 minutes.

QUESTIONS:
1. Given the graph, what can you say about the line? Is it solid or broken?
2. What is the equation of the line?
3. Name 4 points on the line. Name 4 points not on the line.

9
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
4. What mathematical statement would describe all the points above the line?
How about all the points below the line?
5. What conclusion can you make about the coordinates of points on the line
and those which are not on the line?

Here are some tips in graphing linear inequalities in 2 variables.

1. Find the slope and the y-intercept
2. Identify the ordered pairs.
3. Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line.
● SOLID LINE for ≥ 𝑜𝑟 ≤ .
A solid line shows the points on the line are solutions.
● BROKEN LINE for < or >. A broken line shows the points on the
line are NOT solutions.

4. Assign (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include the origin

in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not included in
the shaded part.
EXAMPLE 1: Graph y > 2.
Step 1: Find the slope and the y-intercept
● In this aspect, we denote the given as y = 2. In which, the y-
intercept is at (0,2). Since the line only touches the y axis, the
line is horizontal.

Step 2: Identify the ordered pairs.

● The point for the y-intercept is (0,2)
● The line is horizontal.

Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a broken line since the inequality symbol used is >.

10
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.

If x = 0 and y = 0,
y>2 (0,2)

0>2
FALSE (since 0 is not greater than 2)
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade
above the boundary line.

EXAMPLE 2 : Graph x < -2.

Step 1: Find the slope and the y-intercept
● In this aspect, we denote the given as x = -2. In which, the x-
intercept is at (-2,0). The line only touches the x-axis, therefore
the line is vertical.

Step 2: Identify the ordered pairs.

● The point for the x-intercept is (-2,0)
● The line is vertical.

Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a broken line since the inequality symbol used is <.

Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
x < -2
0 < -2
FALSE
(since 0 is not less than -2)
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade the
left side of the boundary line.

11
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
EXAMPLE 3: Graph the linear inequality y ≤ 4x + 3.
Step 1: Find the slope and the y-intercept
● The slope is 4 and the y-intercept is 3.

Step 2: Identify the ordered pairs.

● The point for the y-intercept is (0,3)
● Since the slope is 4 or 4/1, go 4 units
upward and 1 unit to the right. Therefore,
the next point is (1,7).

Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the

boundary line. Connect the points with
a solid line since the inequality symbol used is ≤.
Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
y ≤ 4x +3
0 ≤ 4(0) + 3
0≤0+3
0≤3
TRUE (since 0 is less than or equal to 3).
Therefore (0, 0) is a solution of the inequality. Shade below the
boundary line.

EXAMPLE 4: Graph the linear inequality 2x + 7y ≥ 14.

Step 1: Find the slope and the y-intercept
2x + 7y ≥ 14
7y ≥ -2x + 14
y ≥ -2/7 x + 2
● The slope is -2/7 and the y-intercept is 2.

Step 2: Identify the ordered pairs.

● The point for the y-intercept is (0,2)
● Since the slope is -2/7, go 2 units downward and 7 units to the
right. Therefore, the next point is (7,0).

12
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a solid line since the inequality symbol used is ≥.

Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
2x + 7y ≥ 14
2(0) + 7(0) ≥ 14
0 + 0 ≥ 14
0 ≥ 14
FALSE (Since 0 is not greater than or equal to 14).
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade
above the boundary line.

A. From the given inequality on the left, determine if the line is broken or
solid and if the shaded region is above/below or to the left/right of the
boundary line. Refer to the example given in the first rows.

ASKED How old is Juanita?
FORMULA/INEQUALITY m + j > 15
If m = 7,
