Lesson 1: Differentiating Linear Inequalities in Two Variables from
Linear Equations in Two Variables
Leni is given by her mother 500 pesos to buy apples and oranges.
She makes sure that the bags of fruits would be good for 5 people.
The cost of each fruit is 25 pesos.
QUESTIONS:
1. How will Leni estimate the number of apples and oranges she will buy?
2. Is the money given to Leni enough to buy all the fruits for 5 people?
Justify your answer. Suppose Leni does not know yet the cost of each
fruit, how will she represent this algebraically?

Linear Equation
2x + y = 4
If x = 0 If y = 0,
2(0) + y = 4 2x + 0 = 4
0+y=4 2x = 4
y=4 x=2
Conclusion: The value of y is 4 and the value of x is 2.
Linear Inequality
2x + y > 4
If x = 0 If y = 0,
2(0) + y > 4 2x + 0 > 4
0+y>4 2x > 4
y>4 x >2
Conclusion: The value of y is greater than 4 and the value of x is greater
than 2.
Possible values of y: {5,6, 7…}
Possible values of x: {3,4, 5…}

Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.
Maria is a data encoder. The graph shows the number of pages she
was able to encode in the first 15 minutes.
QUESTIONS:
1. Given the graph, what can you say about the line? Is it solid or broken?
2. What is the equation of the line?
3. Name 4 points on the line. Name 4 points not on the line.
9
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
4. What mathematical statement would describe all the points above the line?
How about all the points below the line?
5. What conclusion can you make about the coordinates of points on the line
and those which are not on the line?
Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a broken line since the inequality symbol used is >.
10
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
y>2 (0,2)
0>2
FALSE (since 0 is not greater than 2)
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade
above the boundary line.
Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a broken line since the inequality symbol used is <.
Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
x < -2
0 < -2
FALSE
(since 0 is not less than -2)
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade the
left side of the boundary line.
11
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
EXAMPLE 3: Graph the linear inequality y ≤ 4x + 3.
Step 1: Find the slope and the y-intercept
● The slope is 4 and the y-intercept is 3.
12
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs and draw the boundary line. Connect the
points with a solid line since the inequality symbol used is ≥.
Step 4: Test the point (0,0) to the original equation. If it is TRUE, include
the origin in the shaded part. If it is FALSE, then the origin is not
included in the shaded part.
If x = 0 and y = 0,
2x + 7y ≥ 14
2(0) + 7(0) ≥ 14
0 + 0 ≥ 14
0 ≥ 14
FALSE (Since 0 is not greater than or equal to 14).
Therefore (0, 0) is NOT a solution of the inequality. Shade
above the boundary line.
A. From the given inequality on the left, determine if the line is broken or
solid and if the shaded region is above/below or to the left/right of the
boundary line. Refer to the example given in the first rows.

EXAMPLE 2
Solve for what is asked.
The difference between Pedro’s height (p) and Juan’s height (j) is not more
than 2ft. Suppose that Pedro’s height is 5ft and 3in,
what is the height of Juan?
let p be Pedro’s height
GIVEN
j be Juan’s height
ASKED What is the height of Juan?
FORMULA/INEQUALITY p – j < 2
Convert Pedro’s height first. (5 ft and 3 in)
5 ft • 12 in = 60 inches + 3 inches = 63 inches (p)
1 ft
If p = 63 in,
SOLUTION
p–j<2
63 – j < 2
– j < 2 – 63
– j < -61
j > 61 inches or 5ft and 1in
Therefore, Juan’s height is greater than 61 inches

CREATING A BUDGET PLAN
Goal: Provide food for a week to all Marikeños in Brgy. Marikina Heights out
of a certain budget during the pandemic
ROLE: You are assigned to come up with a budget plan for the project of
Mayor Marcy.
ACTIVITY: Make a budget plan
SITUATION: Mayor Marcy assigned you to make a budget plan for food good
for week to all Marikeños in barangay Marikina Heights out of a
certain budget during the pandemic. Each bag of goods must have 5
kilos of rice, 2 kilos of fish, 3 pieces of apples, 5 pieces of oranges,
and 3 canned goods. A kilo of rice costs ₱50, a kilo of fish is ₱60, an
apple is ₱25, an orange is ₱15, and a canned good is ₱20. There are
100 households in the said barangay. Mayor Marcy’s budget for this
project is ₱60,000. Will this be enough?
