Design Basis
“The Fyfe Disc”
1. The Design coefficient of friction between bright annealed stainless steel
and PTFE at design load is less than 3% at less than 25.4mm (1 in) per
minute sliding speed.
2. The pressure on the Virgin PTFE horizontal surface in contact with the
stainless steel is a maximum of 24.1 MPa (3500 psi). (The force on the
mechanically fastened PTFE guides is designed for 45 MPa (6526 psi)
maximum). (Special PTFE composite guides can be used for higher pres-
sures.)
3. Dimples can be added in the PTFE if specified or required by the engineer.
Typical pockets are 7mm (0.275 in) in diameter, 2mm (0.078 in) deep, and
occupy greater than 20% of the PTFE surface area. Add 0.4mm (0.016 in)
to the overall bearing thickness for use of dimples . High quality silicone
grease shall be used.
4. The working compressive stress on “The Fyfe Disc” is up to 35 MPa
(5,076 psi).
5. Long term deflection of “The Fyfe Disc” is less than 7% of element thick-
ness. (For initial load deflection characteristics, see Test Report)
Plate Design
1. The standard lower bearing plate is designed for 20.68 MPa (3000 psi)
pressure on the concrete or grout. Add-on masonry plate sizing is available
upon request.
Testing
“The Fyfe Disc” Bearing, using the Tyfo® Structural element concept has
evolved from years of research development and field observations.
Testing has been carried out on “The Fyfe Disc” elements to twenty times
the design load with full material recovery.
Where testing is required, it is recommended that the production bearings
be tested. This could be carried out on the TYFO® Load Test Machines.

Seismic Designs
Fyfe Developments offers three systems for seismic designs:
- High Damping Rubber “Aseismos Control System A”.
- Combined Disc Sliding and High Damping Rubber
(springs) “Aseismos Control System B”.
- “The Fyfe Disc” Isolators with Internal Displacement Control (springs).
Internal or External Restrainers are available as part of the design.
Installation Procedures
1) Procedure for a Cast-in-Place Structure:
1. Cast or grout the lower central anchor or lower add-on distribution plate on the sup-
port to provide level bearing. Alternate method is to grind the concrete flat with ± 0.1
degree from horizontal.
2. Set “The Fyfe Disc” Bearing (completely assembled from plant) on support.
3. Remove all shipping clamps or steel bands before pouring concrete. Shipping clamps
must be specified by the engineer since not all projects use this concept. Crane hooks
are to be specified by the engineer since slings are normally used.
4. For multi-directional and uni-directional bearings, adjust upper plate to proper setting
as instructed by the engineer and then cast in place.
2) Precast Structure:
1. Place a plate as detailed on drawing into the precast member at the casting plant.
This plate should be larger than the upper plate of the bearing to allow for field tolerances
and welding of this plate to upper plate. See note on page 9.
2. Remove all shipping clamps from bearings just before setting precast member in
place.
3) Steel Structure:
1. Weld or bolt upper plate of bearing to the steel structure. See details on page 12.
Welding details near or on bearing to be approved by the engineer. Protective materials
to be placed over bearings to protect against spark and flash.
Items 1 & 2 apply to all structures with concrete supports. After installation, the bearings and
their surroundings shall be left clean. Temporary clamps shall be removed at the time specified
by the engineer.
Shipping Details
“The Fyfe Disc” bearings are shipped from the factory completely assembled and ready for installa-
tion.
Bearings are disassembled in the field at the Contractor’s risk unless a manufacturer’s repre-
sentative is present at the site.
Steel shipping bands are used and must be removed before the structure is poured or precast/
steel members are lowered into place.
Optional steel shipping clamps shall not be removed before the bearing is set in place in order
to prevent damage to the critical components.
Jacking Ports
A structure can only have replaceable bearings if the designer allows spaces to set an avail-
able hydraulic jack. Too much space can cause the need for expensive shims. Too little space
can mean having to remove concrete or support jacks on foundations through the use of an
