Theorems of Triangle Inequalities

I. Objectives:
At the end of this module learners will be able to:
a. Illustrate theorems on a triangle inequalities (Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem,
Triangle Inequality Theorem, Hinge Theorem);
b. Apply theorems on triangle inequalities; and
c. Prove inequalities in a triangle.
II. Learning Activities
Exterior Angle Theorem
The Exterior Angle Theorem is not so bad and it’s a very good shortcut to finding the measure
of an exterior angle. So, what is an exterior angle?
An exterior angle is when a line is drawn outside of the triangle, extending the angle.

The exterior angle is ∠ACD∠ACD. All the angles inside the triangle are interior angles.
A little side note: the exterior angle and the adjacent interior angle (the one connected to it)
always add up to 180° because together they form a line.

The Exterior Angle Theorem says that an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the 2
non-adjacent interior angles.
Taking our above example, ∠ACD∠ACD would equal whatever ∠A∠A + ∠B∠B equaled because
those are the two angles NOT connected to the exterior angle.
Let’s try two fairly basic examples and then try a few tougher ones.

Example 1: Example 2:

Those will be the two basic types of questions that deal with the Exterior Angle Theorem. They can get
tougher when they throw in more than one x! But they are all set up the same way.

Example 4:

ACTIVITY 1

Directions: Find the measure of each angle indicated. Write your answer in a separate sheet
of paper.

Example:
Can a triangle be constructed with sides of lengths 3 cm, 7 cm, and 8 cm?
Solution:
3+7 > 8
7+8 > 3
3+8 > 7
The sum of any two lengths is greater than the third length. Therefore, a triangle can be
constructed.

Activity 2: Try This

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Can a triangle be constructed with the sides of length 8 cm, 7 cm, and 14 cm?
Answer:

2. Can a triangle be constructed with sides of length 5 cm, 5 cm, and 10 cm?
Answer:

Activity 2.2 Yes or No

Directions: State if the three numbers can be the measures of the sides of a triangle. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. 10, 12, 8 3. 12, 5, 12
2. 9, 17,6 4. 9, 7, 5
