CALCULUS

Lesson 1 – Jan. 25 – 29, 2021

Rules for Differentiation

R.1 The Constant Rule

d/dx ( c ) = 0 ( where c is a constant)

Example: y=3

Solution: d/dx y = d/dx 3

d/dx y = 0

R.2 The Identity Function Rule

d/dx ( x ) = 1

Example: y=x

Solution: d/dx y = d/dx ( x )

d/dx y = dx/dx
d/dx y = 1
R.3 d/dx ( cu ) = c d/dx u

Example: y = 3x

Solution: d/dx y = 3 d/dx ( x )

d/dx y = 3 dx/dx
d/dx y=3(1)
d/dx y=3

R.4 The Sum Rule

d/dx ( u + v ) = du/dx + dv/dx

Example: y = 4 + 2x

Solution: d/dx y = d/dx 4 + 2 d/dx x

d/dx y = d/dx 4 + 2 dx/dx
d/dx y=0+2(1)
d/dx y=2
