Assignment No. 3

Instructions: Solve the following problems in clean sheets of papers. Present your solutions neatly and
in an orderly manner. Please do not submit using jpeg file. It is difficult for me read. Submit your
assignment in PDF file and upload in VSU elearning. Follow the due date as stated in our submission
of activities.

1. Calculate the vertical stress due to a concentrated surface load of 1000 kN at a depth of 2 m
at points directly under the load, and at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 m away. Use
Boussinesq’s equation.

2. Calculate the vertical stress from a concentrated load of 1000 kN at a point whose coordinates
are x = 1 m; y = 2 m; and z = 3 m. Surface load coordinates are (0, 0, 0).

3. A 700 – kN load is supported by a circular footer (at surface) whose diameter is 2 m. Assume
the surface pressure to be uniform over the area. Determine the vertical stress at a depth of
3 m directly under the center and at radial distances of 1, 2, 3, and 4 m from the center.

4. A 4.5 m by 6 m rectangular foundation carrying a uniform load of 190 kN/m2 is applied to the
ground surface. Determine the vertical stress increment due to uniform load at a point 3.0 m
below the (a) center, and (b) corner of the rectangular area.

5. A rectangular area 2 m by 3 m carrying a uniform load of 200 kN/m2is applied to the ground
surface. Determine the vertical stress increment due to the uniform load at (a) 1 m, (b) 3 m,
and (c) 5 m below the area by the approximate method.
