1. (a) Give the analytical treatment of interference of light and hence obtain the
condition for maximum and minimum intensity.
(b) Two coherent sources of intensity 10 W/m2 and 25 W/m2 interfere to form
fringes. Find the ratio of maximum intensity to minimum intensity. [12+4]

2. (a) What is meant by diffraction of light? Explain it on the basis of Huygen’s


wave theory.
(b) What are the types of diffraction and give the difference between them.
(c) What is the difference between Interference and Diffraction? [6+6+4]

3. (a) Explain the following:


i. Polarized light
ii. Double refraction
iii. Non-destructive testing
(b) Calculate the thickness of a quarter wave plate for a monochromatic light of
wavelength 600 nm if the refractive indices of ordinary and extra-ordinary rays
in the medium are 1.5442 and 1.5533 respectively. [12+4]

4. (a) Describe the construction of a typical optical fiber and give the dimensions of
the various parts.
(b) Define the acceptance angle and numerical aperture. Obtain an expression for
the numerical aperture of an optical fiber.
(c) Calculate the numerical aperture and acceptance angle for an optical fiber with
core and cladding refractive indices being 1.48 and 1.45 respectively. [6+6+4]

5. (a) Explain Thomson effect.


(b) State and explain
i. law of intermediate metals and
ii. law of intermediate temperatures.
(c) For a thermo-couple, the neutral temperature is 320 ◦ C. If the cold junction
is at 20 ◦ C , calculate the temperature of inversion. [4+8+4]

6. (a) Explain the term “relative permittivity” of a dielectric medium.

(b) Discuss the mechanisms that lead to electric breakdown.
(c) The dielectric constant of helium at NTP is 1.0000684. Under these condi-
tions, the gas contains 2.7 × 1025 atoms/m3 . Calculate the radius of the atom

(b) What is Bohr magneton? How it is related to magnetic moment of electron?

1. (a) Explain the colors in a thin film when exposed it to sun light.
(b) A soap film of refractive index 1.33 and thickness 5000 A.U. is exposed to
white light. What wavelengths in the visible region are reflected.
(c) How the refractive index of transparent liquid can be determined by using
Newton’s ring method. [6+4+6]

2. (a) Write the expression for resolving power of a telescope.


(b) Explain how resolving power can be improved?
(c) Calculate the linear separation between two points at a distance of 10 km from
a telescope objective of width 0.5 m if the wavelength of light used is 600 nm.

3. (a) Explain the following:


i. Polarization by selective absorption
ii. Polarization by scattering.
(b) Prove that if the angle of incidence corresponds to the Brewster’s angle, then
the angle between reflected and refracted beams is 90o . [10+6]

(c) A paramagnetic material has 1028 atoms per m3 . Its susceptibility at 350 K

1. (a) What are the conditions to obtain maximum intensity in the reflected light
due to a thin film?
(b) A thin film 4 × 10−5 cm thick is illuminated by white light normal to its
surface. Its refractive index is 1.5. What wavelengths are seen in the visible
spectrum of the reflected light?
(c) Explain why Newton’s rings appear as circular rings with central dark.

2. (a) What is diffraction of light?


(b) Describe the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern obtained with single slit.
(c) In a diffraction due to single slit the screen is placed at 1 m from the slit
that is illuminated by a light of wavelength 5890 A.U. The width of the slit
is 0.1 mm. Find the separation between the central maximum and the first

3. (a) Explain the following:

susceptibility of a magnetic material.
(b) An electron in a hydrogen atom circulates with a radius 0.052 nm. Calculate
the change in its magnetic moment if a magnetic induction of 3 weber/m2 acts
at right angles to the plane of orbit. [12+4]

8. (a) Why is the airborne pressure vessels are required in aerospace?


(b) Explain the various properties of the materials used for airborne vessels along
with their salient feature.
