1. (a) Give the analytical treatment of interference of light and hence obtain the
condition for maximum and minimum intensity.
(b) Two coherent sources of intensity 10 W/m2 and 25 W/m2 interfere to form
fringes. Find the ratio of maximum intensity to minimum intensity. [12+4]
4. (a) Describe the construction of a typical optical fiber and give the dimensions of
the various parts.
(b) Define the acceptance angle and numerical aperture. Obtain an expression for
the numerical aperture of an optical fiber.
(c) Calculate the numerical aperture and acceptance angle for an optical fiber with
core and cladding refractive indices being 1.48 and 1.45 respectively. [6+6+4]

(b) Discuss the mechanisms that lead to electric breakdown.
(c) The dielectric constant of helium at NTP is 1.0000684. Under these condi-
tions, the gas contains 2.7 × 1025 atoms/m3 . Calculate the radius of the atom

1. (a) Explain the colors in a thin film when exposed it to sun light.
(b) A soap film of refractive index 1.33 and thickness 5000 A.U. is exposed to
white light. What wavelengths in the visible region are reflected.
(c) How the refractive index of transparent liquid can be determined by using
Newton’s ring method. [6+4+6]

1. (a) What are the conditions to obtain maximum intensity in the reflected light
due to a thin film?
(b) A thin film 4 × 10−5 cm thick is illuminated by white light normal to its
surface. Its refractive index is 1.5. What wavelengths are seen in the visible
spectrum of the reflected light?
(c) Explain why Newton’s rings appear as circular rings with central dark.

(c) In Young’s double slit experiment the separation of slits is 1.9 mm and the
fringe spacing is 0.31 mm. The screen is placed at a distance of 1 m from the
slits. Find the wavelength of the light? [6+6+4]
5. (a) Give an example of engineering application in which you would use a material
with a low value of specific heat and a high value of specific heat.
(b) Discuss the variation of thermal conductivity of a solid with temperature.
(c) Explain the terms:
i. drift velocity
ii. relaxation time
iii. collision time and
iv. mean free path. [4+4+8]

7. (a) Define the terms permeability (µ), susceptibility (χ), magnetic induction (B),

(b) A circular loop of copper having a diameter of 10 cm carries a current of 500
