Emotion recognition in depression: An

investigation of performance and response

confidence in adult female patients with
depression
Self Confidence & Depression

1. In this study, researchers identified/correlated depression and or self confidence by

identifying facial emotion expressions. Those with depression displayed impaired

processing of facial emotion expressions.

2. Depression- the inability to nonverbally communicate effect or normally and having

lowered confidence levels

3. Healthy- Normal

a. The definitions of healthy and depression were found in the reading, in the

study the researchers compared the (FEE) of healthy women and depressed

women to get more accurate results.

4. Questions:

a. Depression:

i. Do you prefer to be alone?

1. Absolutely, Sometimes, Not at all

ii. Do you exercise or go outside at least three times a week?

1. Absolutely, Sometimes, Not at all

b. Healthy:

i. Do you enjoy hanging out with family and friends?

1. Absolutely, Sometimes, Not at all

ii. Does the color yellow make you happy?

1. Absolutely, Sometimes, Not at all

In these questions I tried to correlate each questions to make sure there wasn’t any lying in the

answers. Those who are depressed tend to isolate themselves from others and hide away in

their shells, while those who aren’t like to be around other people and family as much as

possible. Those that are depressed typically aren’t getting exercise, and exercise secretes and

release endorphins that make people happier. Also going outside, especially when the sun is

out makes people happy because the sun gives people energy. The color yellow, is like the sun

and makes people happier. I believe these questions have face validity for the reasons above.

5. I think it would be appropriate to use chi-squared tests for this sample. There are two

categorical variables from a single population of 45 women. Also the test will see if the

two variables have a significant association.

Greenleaf (TV Series)

Age & religion

1. Maturity: the ability to comprehend or understand a concept for yourself and interpret

it for yourself, to think for ones’ self without swaying because of what others might

think
2. Willingness: to want, to make an actual effort to stand out and be different or to walk in

your faith truthfully and honestly.

a. I believe these definitions coincide with the tv show Greenleaf because in the

show it’s honestly about the characters maturity and willingness to be a

Christian, and to walk in their faith truthfully and honestly regardless of age.

There are charcters that are older in age that act like teenagers when it comes to

“how a Christian should act” and teenagers who act as if they were an adult

worshipping Christ.

b. Categorized nominal scale

i. As for coding I would count how many times a cross was shown in the TV

show, the number of times “God, Holy Spirit, The Father, etc” is

mentioned within the tv shows, how many times anything religious is

mentioned, how many times prayer occurs and how many times any

church is shown.

3. A voluntary sample would be used in this instance because people will have to self-

select into the survey. These people have a strong interest in these topics. I would also

use a stratified random sampling.
