BASKETBALL

Origin of the game


➢ The game was invented by Dr. James Naismith (1861-1936)
➢ A native of Ontario, Canada with a Scottish ancestry and become an American
citizen at age of 64.
➢ A member of the teaching staff of YMCA, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.
➢ He invented the game in 1891.
➢ First ball he used is the ball of football or soccer ball instead of a rugby ball.
➢ First goal he used is the two-peach basket nailed to the gymnastics balcony
beside the peach baskets is a ladder where a janitor occupies the place in order
to retrieve the ball from the basket.
➢ The original height of the goal from the floor is 10feet was so ideally selected that
it was never been changed.
➢ He used his 18 students to play the game. 9 players each side.
➢ In 1897 standard the playing inside the court to 5 players.

Popularity of the game


➢ The game was introduced in Mexico in 1892, the first country where basketball
was played outside USA, France in 1893, China in 1894, England in 1895, Brazil
in 1896, Czechoslovakia in 1897, Australia, Persia (now Iran) & Lebanon,
Canada in 1901, Puerto Rico in 1902, Turkey in 1904, Russia, India & Philippines
in 1905.
➢ In 1932 the International Amateur Basketball Federation or Federation of
International Basketball (FIBA) was formed.
➢ In 1936 Berlin, Germany Olympic, Basketball became an Olympic Medal Sports.

History of Basketball in the Philippines


➢ Girls were the first to play the game in 1905 with the Americans as the first sport
teachers & it was not until five years later or in 1910 when boys completed in
their first basketball tournament.

Definition
➢ Played by two teams of 5 players each
➢ Team shoots at opponent’s basket and prevent opponent from securing the ball
and from scoring
➢ Game governed by playing rules/ball may be passed, thrown, tapped or dribbled
in any direction inside the playing court

Skills
A. Footwork
1. Basic stance - position from which on will make most footwork movement.

- legal way for a player to move with ball

2. Lay-up - first shot learn on the move
- Used on the fast break
- Taken as you move toward the basket usually at 45-degree
angle with or without using dribble

Facilities and Equipment


A. Court – shall be a hard-rectangular surface free from obstruction.
1. Dimensions
- 28 meter by 15 meter
2. Boundary Lines -5cm in width
- Sidelines
- End lines
3. Centre Line
- 15.30 meter long parallel to the end lines
- Front court – part of the court which falls between the end line
behind the opponents basket and the nearer edge of the
centerline.
4. Centre Circle
- Radius of 1.80 meters (outer edge)
5. Three Point field goal area
- The floor area marked on the court limited by the lines
forming 2 arcs
- Radius of 6.25 meters from the goal.
6. Free Throw lines
- Parallel to each line
- 3.60 meter long
- 5.80 meter from the end line
Restricted Ares
o Spaces limited by the end lines, fhe free throw lines
and by the lines which originate at the end lines, their
outer edged being 3 meter from the mid-points of the
end lines and terminated at the outer edges of the free
throw lines.
Free Throw Lanes
o Are the restricted are extended in the playing court by
semi-circles with a radius of 1.80 meter their centers at
the mid-points of the free throw lines.
o Similar semi-circles shall be drawn with a broken line
within the restricted areas.

B. Backboards
- Hardwood or fiberglass 3sm. Thick
- 1.80 meter horizontal
- 1.05 meter vertical
- 2.90 meter above the floor
Surface - rectangular drawn behind the ring
- 0.59 meter horizontal
- 0.45 meter vertical
- 1.20 meter from the inner edge of the line
Basket – comprise the rings and nets.
Ring - solid iron 45.cm inside diameter. 3.05 meter or 10feet above
the floor
Net – 40cm in length
Ball - 75-78cm in circumference. 600-650grams
- shall be made of rubber bladder covered with a case of Leather,
Rubber or Synthetic materials.
- it will rebound to a height not less than 1.20 meter nor more than
1.40 meter.

- Foul marker (1-5 for player foul and 1-5 for team foul per
quarter)

Players, Substitutes and Coaches

A. Team
- A coach, an assistant coach, not more than 12 players
- Uniforms should be numbered from 4-15
B. Player leaving the court
- A player should not leave the court without permission from
the concerned officials during playing time to gain an unfair
advantage.
C. Captain
- Representative of his team and shall controls its play
- May address an official on matters of interpretation or to
obtain essential information when necessary.
D. Coach
- 20 mins before the game – Names, Number, Captain, Coach
Assistant Coach
- 10 mins before the game – confirmation- starting 5 players
E. Playing Time
- Two (2) halves of twenty (20) minutes each or four (4)
periods (Quarters) of ten (10) minutes each with intervals of
two (2) minutes between the first and second and between
the third and fourth period half time interval shall be either
ten (10) or Fifteen (15) minutes.
F. Tied Score & Extra Periods
- If the score is tied all the time expiration of the second half
(game played in 2x 20 minutes) or the fourth period (game in
2x 10 minutes), the game shall be continued with an extra
period of five (5) minutes or with as many such periods of 5
minutes as are necessary to break the tie.

E. Duties of scorer
- Record pointer score, player, foul team foul, change time -
out
- No authority to set aside or question made by the other.
F. Duties of timekeeper
- Keep record of playing time and time of stoppage
- Indicate the expiration of playing time
G. Duties of 24 second device
- Operate 24 second device
- Indicate 24 second violation by sounding signal.
