Flooding in Urban Slums (Bangladesh).” Sophie successfully completed her PhD within
three years of her start date, with time-out for two pregnancies. Start date: January 2007,

skeletal remains exhumed from mass graves and prisoner’s cemetery from the Spanish civil
war and postwar years (1936-1943).” Completed in 2012.
2. Dr Marianne Swiech, Bradford University. Thesis title: Diachronic Effects of Bio-Cultural
Factors on Stature and Body Proportions in British Archaeological Populations
Completed Ph.D. in 2006.
3. Dr. Isabel Fragoso, Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, Portugal. Thesis title “Biological and
cultural factors influencing the growth of Lisbon City school children.” I was recruited by
the Technical University of Lisbon to provide the primary supervision of this thesis. Dr.
Fragoso successfully completed her PhD in 1997 and now serves on the staff of that
university.
4. Dr. Janet Dunn, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Thesis title, “The impact of television
on reproductive decisions of women in Bahia, Brazil.” In 1996–97, Janet Dunn studied
family planning and changing female reproductive strategies. She successfully completed her
PhD in 1998. She now is an Assistant Professor of anthropology at the University of
Michigan-Dearborn campus.

Post-doctoral research supervisions


1. Dr Sophie Goudet, co-supervisor with Dr Paula Griffiths and Prof Nyovani J Madise.
Project title: ‘Interventions for preventing undernutrition in children (0-5 years) living in in
urban slum.’ Funding from AXA Research Fund, duration 2013-2015.
2. Dr. Hugo Cardoso, Museu de Antropologia and Universidade de Porto, Portugal. Dr.
Cardoso received a Portuguese Foundation for Scientific Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship
to work with me on problems relating to socio-economic determinants of child growth and
health in historic Portuguese populations. Our work is still progressing. We have an article
in preparation relating to rural-to-urban migration and risk for overweight/obesity.
3. Dr. Bibiana Orden, Universidad de La Plata, Argentina. Dr. Orden received a Wenner-Gren
Foundation for Anthropological Research fellowship to work with me for the 1999-2000
academic year. She was resident at the University of Michigan-Dearborn for that year. We
researched the biosocial factors influencing stature and leg length in Guatemala Maya
populations. Our work was published in three peer-reviewed articles.
