The Best of My Life.

My name is Karla Carballo born in July of 1977, a small little girl blessed by her parents

and grandparents, living in a small city in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Collide with the

Border of Calexico, California in the Imperial Valley. Our weather is pretty hot, humed, and dry

during summer time. In cold times I remember the weather super cold aggressively, that I can

feel in my bones. My father's last name is Carballo and his family is from Spain and Mexico

City, from the other side my mother's last name Lopez and his family is from Spain, Portugal,

and Guadalajara, Mexico.

I was living in a small house with my parents and three sisters, my childhood was good. I

remember my father teaching kids how to play soccer and because he has just girls he teaching

us to live like a boy, we almost never were using huge dresses like our cousins, we play more

with guns, cars, running and playing soccer or something related to sports I have to said that I’m

thankful the way my father prepared us his daughter for life. My father tells us stories about his

grandparents, how they were in the Mexican Army fighting for the rights of the poor people. My

mother is a great lady working hard for her family, teaching us to clean, cook and be ready for

life not just in the house area, be prepared for an educational level. My mother always said that it

is never too late to do what you love to do for you to be better every day.

Since I remember our house was loud and colorful, In Mexico my grandparents made a

birthday party in a huge party, just because our family was big a lot families relatives came to the

party everyone was there uncles, cousins, parents, nieces, sons, daughters, neighbors and more

people than know someone, food always delicious pot of beans, rice, pozole, pork skins with

green salsa, flour tortillas, cakes, and more.

I have the fortune to meet and make connections with my great grandparents and play

bingo every Sunday in their house. Almost every morning I was in my great grandparents house

because they take care of me and other younger cousins too. My great grandmother made the

best delicious bean and flour tortillas with salsa and black coffee, she knows that we always take

her cup of coffee from her. They live longer than a few of their own children. They have the

misfortune to attend at four of their children's funerals, but my great grandparents were stronger

like a rock. I remember the lovely stories that my great grandparents told us during bingo night

or at the dinner table, we were the kind of family that we were always talking, sharing and

supporting each other in god or bad. Their values for the Respect of Others and their lives is part

of my life, they always said that each person has value and respect not for how much they had,

the value and respect for of each person is from inside (love, caring, respect of others, honesty,

courage, etc.) so my family was like that and they teaching us that I missed them and more

because my great grandparents died when they get really older I was 10 years when my first

great grandparent pass away and my last one were a few months before I moved to the US by

that time I was almost 18 years old.

Then soon I finished my second semester in the UABC in Mexicali, Baja California,

Mexico and get my grades I got my residency in the US in 1997, I moved to El centro,

California and started working for a Hotel like maid, cleaning room, room service and helping

with the special events (weddings, sweet sixteen, Baptism, etc,) . During the morning I was

working in the Hotel and by nights I was attending school. I was working at the Hotel for a few

years, later I found another job that can give me the opportunity to attend school during the

morning and work in the evenings, that way I can take more classes and get my ESL diploma

and my GED earlier than expected to go to College.

I get married in 2003 and by that time I was finished my ESL school at IVC Community

College in the Imperial Valley, same year my husband get a job opportunity in New Mexico and

we moved there, the next year the company give to him the opportunity to work in different

Retail stores in the USA and we were living in different cities for a short period time, my two

oldest daughters born in California and my two youngest kids born in Las Vegas, Nevada.

My family and I established our residency in Las Vegas, Nevada in July of 2007, since

then we are working and opening one small business about Mexican Antique, Clay Pottery, etc.

here in Vegas, our kids are attending school, my two oldest daughters are attending 10 grade and

the little ones are attending second and third grade.

I live a few miles away from my family, but my heart is with them and what I learned

from them is what I teach my kids. Today my life story is about love, tenacity, respect, and never

denied from where you came from. I would like to be there but my immediate family is here, Is

good how our lives change and take us from different paths. Mexicali is where I was born and

lived my childhood, now Las Vegas is where I’m having my family and we see what the future

has for us.
