The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation “Dei Verbum”

Chapter 1, 2, and 3 (Summary)

The Divine Revelation of the Lord can be seen in the presence of his beloved Son Jesus Christ. Through
God’s goodness and wisdom he chose to be visible for us- the Word became Flesh- for us to be
fellowship- following him unconditionally or having eternal trust- with him. Since the beginning God
manifested himself to our first parents- Adam and Eve, but when the Fall of Man occurred- where man is
inclined to sin and death- the promise of God’s redemption and salvation is hoped to be handed over to
humanity. God at the right time called his prophets- Abraham, Moses, etc. – to prepare the Gospel, wait
for the coming of God’s redemption promise, and to prepare a great nation for him that acknowledges
God as the one living and true God. Centuries came and finally God revealed himself fully through Jesus
Christ where his context of revealing himself can be seen in Jesus Christ’s life itself. Jesus Christ fulfilled
the covenant that God has given to him and become the mediator that fills the void between God and
Man due to Adam and Eve’s fall to sin. God has chosen to be human for the sake of us; he chose to
communicate with us in his human form and proclaimed his will and the salvation of men that
humankind can understand.

The Obedience of Faith described by the Dei Verbum is an act given to the God who reveals, it is
described as a human response. First, it is the commitment to God by full submission of his intellect and
will, second, an act of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit moves the heart and turning it to God, third,
it is the opening the eyes of the mind and giving joy to everyone in believing the truth, and lastly, it is to
bring a deeper understanding to God’s revelation.

This revelation of God is handed down to generations through Christ’s appointment to his apostles with
the help of the Holy Spirit- giving them authority to preach all men the Gospel and the revelation of God.
Together with the Sacred Scriptures and Traditions humans in every generation experience the
revelation itself through them- that they are redeemed and saved from sin and death which is attached
to them since birth. Nowadays, handed by the apostles, bishops with the Holy Spirit are the
commissioned preachers of this revelation to the church. In understanding God’s revelation- from the
creation to the scriptures and unto Jesus Christ- under the human nature makes use of human reason,
this human capacity is a nature from God for we humans are created in his likeness. These sacred
scriptures and traditions are studied accurately in search for its real intention written by the sacred
writer, after then will preached to the people of God

God’s Revelation is absolute, he revealed himself out of his love for us- to redeem us and to save us
from the darkness of sin and death. This revelation is handed over to the apostles and to the bishops to
spread the sacred scriptures and traditions to the people of God; this is also handed so that human who
is suffering from sin and death can decline it and have fellowship to God through Jesus Christ and attain
the promise of eternal life.
