How to write a CV: Tips for 2019 (with

examples)

This guide will show you how to write a great CV that’s ready for 2019 and beyond.

What is a CV?
Your CV is a personal marketing document used to sell yourself to prospective employers. It
should tell about you, your professional history and your skills, abilities and achievements.
Ultimately, it should highlight why you’re the best person for the job.

A CV is required when applying for a job. In addition to your CV, employers may also
require a cover letter and a completed application form.

What to include in your CV in 2019


While the structure of a CV is flexible, bending to your unique skill set and experiences, there
are particular sections that employers expect to see on your CV regardless.

Here are the sections you must include in your CV:

Name, professional title and contact details

The first part of your CV, positioned at the top of the page, should contain your name,
professional title and contact details. Under no circumstances should you title your CV with
‘curriculum vitae’ or ‘CV’ as it’s a waste of valuable space. Treat your name as the title
instead.

When it comes to your contact details, your email address and phone number(s) are essential.
Once upon a time, it was customary to include your full address on your CV. Today, you
simply need to list your town and county.

Here is an example of how your name, professional title and contact details might look:

Personal profile

A personal profile, also known as a personal statement, career objective and professional
profile, is one of the most important aspects of your CV. It’s a short paragraph that sits just
underneath your name and contact details giving prospective employers an overview of who
you are and what you’re all about.

You should tailor your profile to every job you apply for, highlighting specific qualities that
match you to the role. Aim to keep your personal statement short and sweet, and no longer
than a few sentences. To make the most of this section, you should try to address the
following:

1. Who are you?


2. What can you offer the company?
3. What are your career goals?

Experience and employment history

Your employment history section gives you a chance to outline your previous jobs,
internships and work experience.

List your experience in reverse chronological order as your recent role is the most relevant to
the employer.

When listing each position of employment, state your job title, the employer, the dates you
worked and a line that summarises the role. Then bullet point your key responsibilities, skills
and achievements, and bolster each point with powerful verbs and figures to support each
claim and showcase your impact.

It helps to choose the duties most relevant to the job you’re applying for, especially if it’s a
long list. If you have many years’ worth of experience, you can reduce the detail of old or
irrelevant roles. If you have positions from more than 10 years’ ago, you can delete them.

Here’s an example of how to lay out each position of employment on your CV:

Education and qualifications

Like your experience section, your education should be listed in reverse chronological order.
Include the name of the institutions and the dates you were there, followed by the
qualifications and grades you achieved.

If you have recently left education, you may write your degree, A-levels (or equivalents) like
so:

Institution name – Dates attended (from – to)

Qualification/subject – Grade

If you have a degree, you could list a few of the most relevant modules, assignments or
projects underneath.

For professionals that are a little further along in their careers, or have many certificates in
their repertoire, you can lay your qualifications out in this way:

Qualification, grade – Institution – Year

Additional sections

There is a range of additional sections that may strengthen your CV and highlight your skills.
Here are just a few you can include if you have room:

Key skills: If you’re writing a functional CV, or have some abilities you want to show off to
the employer immediately, insert a key skills section underneath your personal profile. You
should aim to detail four to five abilities at most.

Hobbies and interests: If you feel that your CV is lacking, you can boost your document by
inserting a hobbies and interests section at the end. Be careful though; avoid listing hobbies
that don’t add value to your CV or are run-of-the-mill, like reading. Draw on interests that
make you stand out or are relevant to the job.

References: Like including an address on your CV, adding your referees to the end of your
CV is no longer standardised. You can include a line that reads ‘references available on
request’, but if you don’t have room, it’s acceptable to remove it altogether.

Formatting and spacing guidelines


If you’re unsure of how to format your CV, it’s worth downloading a few CV templates to
familiarise yourself. After all, formatting and spacing your CV is equally as important as the
content.
Here are some formatting and spacing tips to bear in mind:

Length: The standard length of a CV is maximum two pages. However, one size doesn’t fit
all, and so for some professionals, one or three pages may be more appropriate.

Headings: Each section must be introduced by a big, bold heading to ensure an easy read.

Font type: Most employers will receive your CV in a digital format, so choose a clear font
like Calibri or Arial. You can use a different font type for your headings, but keep it
professional and easy-to-read too.

Font size and page margins: The body of your CV should be between 10 and 12 point font,
and your headings between 14 and 18 points. Keep your page margins around 2.5cm, but
never reduce them to less than 1.27cm or your CV will appear cluttered and hard to read.
White space ensures clarity and professionalism.

Proofreading and consistency: Your formatting must be consistent throughout your CV to


keep it looking slick. Don’t spoil your polished look by including typos and inaccuracies;
proofread like a pro to capture every mistake or invest in intelligent spellcheckers like
Grammarly.

Tailoring, keywords and ATSs: It’s perfectly acceptable to keep a generic copy of your CV
for your own records, but if you’re applying for a job, it must be tailored to the role. Not only
will this show employers why you’re a match, but it will help your application beat the ATS
robots too.

Saving the file: It’s likely you’ll send your CV via email or through a job board like CV-
Library. Save your CV as a pdf file to ensure recruiters can open it on any device. A pdf will
also maintain formatting, so you can be sure that employers will see your CV as you
intended.

What not to include


There are a variety of details that you shouldn’t include on your CV. Here are a few of the
common ones:

A headshot: In many countries, it’s common practice to include a photo of yourself on your
CV. But the UK is not one of them.

Age and date of birth: The only dates that should be on your CV are from employment and
your qualifications. Your age doesn’t affect your ability to do the job, and it’s illegal for
employers to ask about age under the Equality Act 2010.

Marital status: Like your age, your marital status and dependents don’t affect your ability to
do your job. These details are protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, and it’s
against the law for employers to ask about them, so don’t include them on your CV.

Cara Membuat Resume Kerja
Berikut ini adalah tips menulis resume Bahasa Inggris kerja yang mencerminkan diri dan
spirit kamu:

1. Curriculum Vitae:
– CV yang menarik diharapkan dapat membawa kita menuju masa depan yang cerah.
Isinya adalah data diri disertai ringkasan perjalanan pen didikan dan aktivitas
profesional seseorang.
– CV tiap orang pastinya berbeda beda. Oleh karena itu, se sungguhnya tak ada teori
penulisan CV yang harus tepat sebab semuanya kembali ke sejarah masing masing
orang.
2. Setting atau perwajahan:
– Hindari kertas bermotif, bergaris, berwarna atau desain meriah, dan terlalu banyak
hiasan, kecuali kamu melamar di bidang desain kreatif. Untuk amannya, pilihlah
kertas putih bermutu baik yang tak terlalu banyak serat,]angan pakai kertas daur ulang
karena tidak dapat menyerap tinta dan dapat merusak printer.
– Gunakanlah tinta warna hitam. Cetaklah menggunakan laser printer. Cetaklah
beberapa sekaligus, kalau bisa hasil print, bukan hasil fotokopi.
– Font: untuk amannya, gunakan huruf Palatino, Garamond, Arial, Times New
Roman,Tahoma,Georgia. Perhitungkan panjang CV dengan size huruf, lalu buatlah 1-
2 halaman CV.
3. Bahasa:
– Setiap informasi harus mudah dipahami.
– Semua keterangan harus jelas. Jangan pakai singkatan, namun dijabarkan.
– Gunakan tata bahasa dan tanda baca yang benar.
– Gunakanlah kata kerja, namun pemakaiannya jangan diulang-ulang.
– Gunakan kalimat yang sederhana.
4. Tema:
– CV senantiasa bertema positif.
– Sebutkan prestasi dan kisah sukses.
– Hindari tema kegagalan.
5. Sebanyak apa pun pengalaman kamu, usahakan singkat, maksimum dua halaman.
Pilihlah pengalaman pengalaman terbaik dan terelevan untuk dicantumkan.
6. Tuliskan data diri di bagian paling atas. Hal itu untuk memudahkan calon bos
mengenalmu, dan menghubungimu. Nama wajib yang dicantumkan adalah nama
pertama dan nama keluarga atau marga.Jika tidak memiliki marga, nama terakhir
difungsikan sebagai nama keluarga. Mencantumkan nomor telepon dan HP, serta
alamat e-mail adalah keharusan agar kamu mudah dihubungi.
7. Pendidikan:
– Ijazah, gelar, atau sertifikat, beserta tahun belajar dan penerimaannya.
– Jelaskan bidang studi, fakultas atau jurusan yang diambil. Sebutkan nama
universitas atau institusi tempat kamu belajar.
– Sebutkan prestasi yang diraih atau beasiswa dan penghargaan yang diterima.
– Cantumkan ekstra kurikuler, kursus dan seminar yang pernah diikuti,terutama yang
mendukung profesi atau bidang kerja yang dilamar.
8. Jelaskan dengan lengkap:
– Data tahun bekerja, bidang usaha dan jenis pekerjaan, nama dan lokasi
perusahaan,jabatan, dan apa yang kamu kerjakan di sana.Daftar perusahaan di mana
saja kamu pernah bekerja atau magang.
– Bila tak banyak data tentang pekerjaan, masukkan data kegiatan kamu dalam
berbagai aktivitas yang positif, seperti berorganisasi, bekerja paruh waktu,dan
magang.
– Cantumkan prestasi yang pernah diraih dengan lengkap: dalam bidang apa,
bagaimana kamu dapat meraihnya, dan berapa lama waktu yang kamu gunakan untuk
meraih pencapaian itu. Ceritakan dalam bentuk kalimat-kalimat pendek.
9. Kualifikasi kamu:
– Tujuan penulisan data pekerjaan yang pernah dilakukan adalah menunjukkan ragam
profesi atau bidang tanggung jawab, kompetensi pekerjaan dan kematanganmu.
– Berupa pernyataan-pernyataan pendek, jelas, dan tidak mengada-ada.
– Data lengkap kemahiran atau keahlianmu.
– Bukti hasil kerja dan kualitas kerja yang memuaskan. Sebutkan dengan data
spesifik, atau dengan referensi orang lain.
10. Anggap pembaca CV tidak memahami bidang atau profesimu. Berikan penjelasan
singkat pada hal-hal teknis.
11. CV menggambarkan:
– Ambisi yang kuat, cita-cita yang kuat, keluasan minat, keterampilan dan keahlian
yang dimiliki, kepribadian, dan track record, atau perjalanan hidup seseorang.
– Semua faktor ini memperlihatkan kapasitas seseorang dalam melakukan pekerjaan,
serta kemampuan untuk menyelesaikan tanggung jawabnya.
12. Dilarang meniru CV orang lain! CV harus unik dan orisinil seperti diri kita. Karena
kita adalah makhluk ciptaan Tuhan yang unik, tak ada yang menyamai, baik di masa
lalu, kini, maupun yang akan datang.
13. Tonjolkan:
– Kekuatan yang kita miliki dan kegiatan positif yang kita lakukan.
– Tunjukkan keterampilan yang dikuasai. Cantumkan seluruh ketrampilan yang kamu
kuasai.
– Atau keahlian yang layak diketahui penerima lamaran. Jelaskan sampai di mana
tingkat kemahiranmu, misalnya dalam bahasa asing.
– Sebisa mungkin tidak menampakkan kelemahan diri, namun tetap bertindak jujur.
– Mencintai diri sendiri bukan berarti narsis, tapi self respect!
14. Jangan sebutkan:
– Bila kamu terlalu sering pindah kerja, jangan sebutkan alasan keluar. Jika kamu
telah bekerja dua atau tiga tahun, dan pindah, kamu juga tidak perlu menyebutkan
alasan kamu meninggalkan pekerjaan atau pindah kerja di CV. Tidak usah
menyebutkan gaji dan bonus yang pernah diterima di CV.
– Tak perlu mencantumkan nomor telepon perusahaan lama dan nama mantan bosmu.
Kecuali bila mantan bos kamu bersedia memberikan referensi yang mendukungmu di
pekerjaan kamu yang baru.
– Begitu pula jika kamu hendak pindah ke pekerjaan yang baru, dan masih bekerja di
perusahaan saat ini, jangan sebutkan nomor teleponmu di perusahaan tempat kamu
sedang bekerja sekarang dan nama atasanmu.
15. Jika baru lulus sekolah atau belum mempunyai pengalaman kerja, CV akan sangat
pendek. Oleh sebab itu, isilah CV dengan memuat kegiatan yang pernah kamu
lakukan. Tunjukkan minat dan hobi kamu, dan prestasi apa yang kamu dapat dari
melakukan hal-hal itu.
16. Aktivitas: Sebutkan nama organisasi, beri penjelasan singkat, dan peran kamu dalam
organisasi ini, waktu keterlibatanmu di organisasi itu, serta pencapaian yang kamu
raih. Misalnya: Aktif di organisasi pencinta alam, yayasan yatim piatu, dsb. Aktivitas
semacam ini boleh dicantumkan, tapi tidak harus ada.
17. Cantumkan:
– Informasi Tambahan. Gunanya untuk memperlihatkan prestasi yang pernah kamu
capai. Misalnya: best employee of the month, pernah terpilih sebagai karyawan yang
mewakili perusahaan untuk training di luar negeri, dll.
– Minat. Keterangan singkat tentang minat atau hobi kamu perlu disebutkan, terutama
jika menunjang pekerjaanmu.
18. Jika kamu sempat berhenti bekerja beberapa tahun, dan ingin bekerja
kembali,jelaskan kegiatan yang kamu lakukan selama vakum di Informasi Tambahan.
Sebutkan pula kelebihanmu, misalnya:
Tiga tahun terakhir saya gunakan untuk membesarkan dan mendidik ke dua anak
balita saya. Dengan pengalaman bekerja saya terdahulu, ditambah kemampuan saya
untuk mengatur waktu, menyusun dan mengatur anggaran, serta bekerja secara
disiplin dan sistematis, semoga saya dinilai mampu untuk memanfaatkan pengalaman
saya bagi kemajuan perusahaan.
19. Sebaliknya, bila pengalaman kerja sangat banyak dan bervariasi, kamu dapat memilah
dengan membuat dua CV yang spesifik untuk ditujukan bagi perusahaan dan bidang
berbeda yang kamu minati. Misalnya: Untuk perusahaan yang membuka posisi
marketing, kamu menonjolkan kelebihan marketing. Untuk perusahaan yang
membuka posisi copywriter, kamu menonjolkan kelebihan menulis iklan.
20. Referensi:
– Bila ada referensi, cantumkanlah nama dua orang, beserta nomor kontak mereka.
– Pastikan mereka setuju untuk memberi rekomendasi tentang kamu kepada calon bos
kamu. Jangan sampai mereka merasa terganggu dengan hal itu.
– Berikan CV terbaru kamu kepada para pemberi referensi. Beritahukan kepada siapa
saja kamu memberitahukan nomor kontak mereka. Jangan minta referensi dari sanak
keluarga, kecuali mereka berprofesi sebagai dokter dan rohaniwan. Pemberi referensi
sebaiknya punya jabatan dan performance yang bagus di bidangnya.
– Gunakan pemberi referensi dari perusahaan tempat kamu pernah bekerja dulu,
misalnya mantan bos.
– Jika sudah diterima, hubungi pemberi referensi, ceritakan berita baik itu dan
ucapkan terimakasih melalui telpon, e-mail atau bingkisan kecil.
– Walaupun sudah bekerja di kantor idaman, tetap jalin hubungan dengan pemberi
referensi, misalnya: mantan dosen dan mantan bos. Mereka sekarang adalah teman-
teman profesionalmu yang patut dipertahankan. Hubungan yang baik dengan mereka
bagaikan memiliki mentor yang mendukung kamu dalam berbagai cara sepanjang
perjalanan kariermu.
– Bila tidak punya referensi, siapkan alasan yang logis.
21. Persiapkan CV jauh-jauh hari. Informasi terkini dapat kamu tambahkan di kemudian
hari.
22. Penulisan surat lamaran dan CV biasanya dengan komputer, lalu dicetak dalam kertas
dengan permukaan berwarna terang. Berat berkisar 60-80 gram per lembar. Hasil
print difotokopi juga boleh. Surat lamaran dan CV masa kini banyak yang dikirim
melalui e-mail. Dari surat lamaran dan CV, perusahaan menilai kemampuan kita
dalam menulis dan merangkai kata-kata dengan baik, benar, dan tepat.
