Differences and Characteristics of Contemporary Art Form in the Philippines

The term contemporary art and modern art often used interchangeably but they
have a huge difference. Contemporary art are arts made in the present day while
modern art put the beginning in the West at around the 1860s, continuing up to the
1960s. They also have a huge difference between the methods, mediums, and
approaches used on art. The term “contemporary art” refers to art made and produced
by artists living today. Today’s artists work in and respond to a global environment that is
culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide range
of mediums, contemporary artists often reflect and comment on modern-day society.

Some artists in the 20th century changed from realistic representation and the
depiction of the human figure towards abstraction. After World War II in New York City,
the world of art made a term “abstract expressionism” to characterize an art movement
that was neither completely abstract, nor expressionistic. Nevertheless, the movement
challenged artists to place more emphasis on the process of making art rather than the
final product. Artists like Jackson Pollock brought art-making to choreographic heights
by dripping paint in grand yet spontaneous gestures.

There is a complexity of the materials and concepts of the arts of contemporary

artists due to artists pulling from an infinite variety of materials, sources, and styles to
create art.

Contemporary arts are usually a reflection or a comment of an artist from

conflicts on our society; issues on politics, environmental issues, economic equality,
government, social issues, human rights, gender equality, humanity, global conflicts,
culture issues and many more. Philippines has a collection of contemporary art that tells
us the story of our country. It shows different sides of our country’s story; the past, the
present and the future that can be express through an art.

Some of the popular contemporary artists from Philippines: Martha Atienza, a

contemporary artist for social change, Erik Matti, a filmmaker, Alfredo and Isabel
Aquilian, a complex installation artists.
