Module objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to:

• Explain the HP 3PAR Controller options for the 7000 and 7000c series models
• Explain the drive cage expandability options for the 7000 and 7000c series
• Describe the Node:Slot:Port (N:S:P) naming convention for controller node ports
• Describe the Cage:Magazine:Disk (C:M:D) convention for physical disks
• Understand the rules regarding physical disk population in the 7000/7000c series drive cages

7000 hardware architecture

• The base enclosure SFF drive chassis holds up to

24 SFF drives per enclosure
• The 7000 series is the only series to include
controller nodes inside the primary drive chassis
• Models cannot be upgraded (ie: 7200c upgraded
to a 7400c or 7450c)

7000 Series disk encryption
• Two types of self-encrypting drives (SED) are supported:
− Data-at-Rest encryption (DAR)
− Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 (includes a tamper-evident seal)
• Both types of drives leverage industry-standard SEDs
• Both DAR and FIPS drives offer the same level of encryption and can be mixed
− HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 MU2 or higher (DAR drives)
− HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 or higher (FIPS 140-2 drives)

Controller node to expansion cage cabling (1 of 2)

• Each node has two SAS controller-to-enclosure connectors with 4 x 6Gb/s lanes each
• Controller enclosure internal drives are connected to controller port DP-1
• First external enclosure is added to controller ports DP-2
• Additional enclosures then alternate between controller ports DP-1 and DP-2
• Each drive enclosure comes with mounting rail kit, 2 x IO-modules, 2 x power cables and 2 x
1m SAS cables
• Enclosures can be installed in adjacent racks
• 2m and 6m SAS expansion cable kits are available

Physical disk guidelines (1 of 2)

• Before proceeding with the drive population, verify that all applicable licenses associated with the system
are registered.
• If the array is enabled with the Data-at-Rest (DAR) encryption feature, only use the self-encrypting drives
(SED). Using a non-self-encrypting drive can cause errors during the upgrade process.
• The first expansion drive enclosure added to a system must be populated with the same number of drives as
the node enclosure.
• The drives must be identical pairs.
• The same number of drives and type should be added to all of the drive enclosures in the system.
• The minimum addition to a two-node system without expansion drive enclosures is two identical drives.
• The minimum addition to a four-node system without expansion drive enclosures is four identical drives.
