EXERCISE #2 – Usage of Fill Handle, Auto Sum Button

View the link first and try to follow the tutorial in an Excel Program before doing this exercise.

Print screen the output of every instruction but delete first the given illustrations. Use if possible 1 page per instruction
so the output will be very visible.

1. Type 300 in cell B2. Select the cell again and click on the fill handle
And drag it till cell L2. (Notice that the fill handle copy the number
From cell B2 till L2)

2. This time you make a series of number from B2 to B15. Click again
The fill handle of Cell B2 and drag till cell B15 and click the selection
Box and click series

3. Next we create incremental numbers from cell C2 to C15. We will increase

the numbers in column C by 2. Let’s make a pattern first for the fill handle
to follow. We type 302 in cell C3 then select both cell C2 and C3 and then
click and drag the fill handle down to cell C15

4. Next we decrease the numbers from cells D2 to D15 by 2.

Type
On cell D3 298. Then select both cells D2 and D3, click and

Drag the fill handle down to cell D15

Apply the following to complete the data:

5. Make a series from cell D4 to L4

6. Copy cell D5 to L5
7. Increase the number from cell D6 to L6 by 3

8. Make a series from cell E6 to E15

9. Increase the numbers by 4 the numbers from cells F6 to F15

10. Decrease the numbers by 4 the numbers from cells G6 to G15

11. Copy the number from H6 to H15, K6 to K15

12. Make a series from I6 to I15, L6 to L15

13. Increase the numbers by 5 from cells J6 to J15

14. Make a series from cells D3 to L3

Let’s do some simple calculation using the data that we have created using the fill handle

15. In making calculation in the cell let’s explore the Auto sum button locate at the upper
Right hand corner of the ribbon the home tab. Select the cells B2 to L2 and click the
Selector area of the auto sum button and click sum to add the values of the said range.
When the sum appears type in cell M1 the SUM. To have a quick sum in every
Succeeding rows you can either click and drag the fill handle from cell M2 down to M15
or you can simply double click the fill handle in cell M2.

16. Let’s calculate the average of cells B2 to L2. Since there is a cell that will not be included in the calculation, we
calculate the average by using the = sign. The equal sign signals the computer that calculations will be done in the
cell. In cell N2 type first the = sign then type average, then type the open parenthesis (to get the range of numbers
to be calculated) and select cell B2 to L2 and press enter. When the average of cells B2 to L2 appears in cell N2, then
type the heading AVERAGE in cell N1. To have the average in the next succeeding rows just click on the fill handle
from cell N1 to cell N15. Format all the answers as a whole number, just click the increase decimal then decrease
decimal button in the ribbon.
17. Let’s use the COUNT NUMBERS function. This is commonly use if you want to know the number of data that are
being considered instead of counting them manually, we can use the COUNT NUMBERS function instead. In cell O1
type the heading COUNT, then try to know how many data are being considered from cell B2 to L15. Select cell O2
then type the =sign, count, open parenthesis then select from cell B2 to L15, then press enter key.

18. Let’s use the MAX function. This function is commonly used to look for the highest value in a multiple given data
instead of looking for it manually we used the excel program to look for it immediately. Let’s look for the highest
value from cells B2 to L15. Type in cell P1 the heading MAX, then select the cell P2, type the = sign, max then open
parenthesis then select cells B2 to L15, press enter key.
19. Let’s use the MIN function. This function is commonly used to look for the LOWEST value in a multiple given data
instead of looking for it manually we used the excel program to look for it immediately. Let’s look for the lowest
value from cells B2 to L15. Type in cell Q1 the heading MIN, then select the cell Q2, type the = sign, MIN then open
parenthesis then select cells B2 to L15, press enter key.
20. Let’s use the same functions for the columns. Type the following headings in the following cells:
A16 – SUM A18 – COUNT A20 - MIN
A17 – AVERAGE A19 – MAX
To get the sum of every column select first cells B2 to B15 then click the function auto SUM. To do the same for the
next columns click cell B16, then click and drag the fill handle to get the sum of the next columns up to column L.

To get the average of every column, select cell B17 then type the = sign, type average, the open parenthesis and
select from B2 to B15 then press the enter key. To do the same for the next columns click cell B17, then click and
drag the fill handle to get the average of the next columns up to column L. Format the answers to become whole
numbers by clicking increase decimal then decrease decimal buttons.
Do the same procedure using the min, count and max functions.

21. Apply different color fill to the answers but see to it that the answers will still be visible. You can use also font color
just to make the content of the cell more visible. Do necessary formatting like widening the cell, change font, center
alignment, etc. to make the final output attractive.
