Adolf Hitler was one of the most notorious and powerful dictators that ruled the 20th century.
Michelle Castelino
The invasion of Poland in Europe in the year 1939 led to World War 2 that outbreak by the

initiation of the Nazi forces (Takala and Auvinen, 2016). The Nazi forces were able to occupy
the whole of Europe by the year 1941. Adolf Hitler initiated the capitalization of popular
discontent, economic woes as well as political infighting for taking the absolute power of
Germany. Murder of more than 6 million Jew was fuelled by the obsessive pursuit and anti-
Semitism of Adolf Hitler. The Nazi Party or the National Socialist German Workers Party was
joined by Adolf Hitler in the year 1918 after returning to Munich after facing World War 1.
By the end of 1921, the position of leader of that party was held by Adolf Hitler. He led the
party with his leadership qualities. Adolf Hitler was sentenced for five years as well after he
and his followers got into a battle with Munich police involving guns (DiNardo, 2018). Adolf
Hitler was actually in a relationship with his niece but was responsible for her death as well,
due to his possessiveness and jealousy. He even had a relationship with Eva Braun but refused
to get married to her. The policies that were shown by Hitler, including his fascist policies
resulted in the precipitation of World War 2. This resulted in the holocaust and death of more
than 6 million Jews along with the 5 million non-combatants. Adolf Hitler designed the Nazi
banner consisting of a Swastika as he had painting abilities. The leadership and the other
character qualities that were gained by Adolf Hitler was due to the various incidents in his life
from his younger years.
However, his stubbornness and negative qualities led him to affect so many lives negatively by
his leadership phase. His dictatorship actually brought negative effects on the Jews and other
innocent lives because of the negative incidents faced by him in his early life. Adolf Hitler
regulated laws and policies against Jews so that he can exclude the Jew from society.
Leadership styles
Transformational leader
Transformational leadership is the sort of leadership theory that supports the leader to work
with his team for identifying any change that is needed as well as the creation of a vision for
guiding change through examples and inspiration (Amaladas, 2017). The committed members
of the group are helpful in executing the change that is identified as necessary by the group
work. The individuals, as well as the social systems that are present needs to go through a
change if the execution of policies is applied and implemented a transformational leader.

However, this will be the contribution of the whole team in a unified form, and their efforts

his leadership and personal characteristics. By transformational leadership, Mahatma Gandhi
was able to stimulate and build a team of the diverse Indian population in a unified manner
(Mallik, 2016). For creating the outcome as the desired result, Mahatma Gandhi and the
followers end up working together towards a specific goal and development. Mainly four types
of transformational leadership are present, namely intellectual stimulation, Individualized
consideration, Idealized Influence and Inspirational motivation.
The performance of the team and the leader are dependent on the contribution of these
components in the transformational leader. Transformational leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi
possess or adapt too many qualities that require to be their leadership qualities. The qualities
include self-management, keeping self-ego in check, the capability of taking risks, making
tough and difficult decisions, inspiring and motivating team members and followers by good
qualities and examples, adaptability to the follower preferences as well as capability of catering
new ideas for the team growth (Rawson, 2018). The leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and his
supporters are equally responsible and are supportive of each other. They motivate and inspire
each other for levelling up based on their morality.

of the team members are the most important in this style of leadership. Therefore, the followers
of the team members in most cases are least acknowledged and are nearly ignored in this
leadership style until the workforce is required for the completion of the work. The important
decisions regarding the progress of the team towards the achievement of the desired goal and
objective are taken by the leader. Adolf Hitler dictates the work that needs to be completed by
the team. (books.google.co.in, 2020) [R eferr ed to Appendix 2]
In order to make leadership effective, the leader must possess some characteristics. These are:
Control of behaviour
Mahatma Gandhi was a political as well as ethical leader that set good examples by his
principles and way of living. The leadership style that is followed by Mahatma Gandhi was
transformational leadership. The principles and ethics that were followed by Mahatma Gandhi
was mainly ahimsa, truth, belief, Satyagraha, Swaraj and nonviolence.
(onlinelibrary.wiley.com, 2020)
On the contrary, Adolf Hitler was intense and attacking. He barely controlled his anger and led
his team with anger and pressured forces. His unrelenting anger and out of control on his
behaviour and emotions are devastating to his own team as well. His main motto was victory
through autocratic leadership and forced decisions. (history.com, 2020)
Systematic and limitation in leadership rules
In the case of transformational leadership, Mahatma Gandhi focussed on the people and the
workforce that were his followers. Systematic rules and limitations were followed by him in
implementing any sort of actions that may affect his followers. The future of his actions, along
with the consequences of his actions, are considered by Mahatma Gandhi. The commitment,
accountability, strategies and pathways that are initiated by Gandhi in his actions are important
to be considered. (inkspire.org, 2020)
However, in the case of Adolf Hitler, the consequences and results of his actions are not
considered by him. The decisions that are taken by him regarding the team and their actions
are ferocious and are not gentle. As Adolf Hitler follows autocratic leadership, the decision-

skills as he conveys his message to his followers and the opponents by the good interactive
method. The feelings of the other party and the consequences of his words were considered by
him during communication. (inkspire.org, 2020)
However, Adolf Hitler was a successful and talented orator. He also had an excellent quality
of communicating and conveying his ideas to his followers. However, the feeling and
interactive style of the other party was not considered by him. (history.com, 2020)
Conclusion
From the above discussion regarding the leadership styles that were followed by Mahatma
Gandhi and Adolf Hitler in leading the nation, it can be concluded that Mahatma Gandhi had
the better way of leading the nation. The leadership qualities and the sort of discipline that they
represent in their actions related to leadership were discussed in this article to have a proper
and appropriate comparison of their leadership qualities. The best leadership skills that were
possessed by Mahatma Gandhi and Adolf Hitler were discussed and compared to assess the
better leader of the two.
