Study on
Immigration
Letter to the educator
Dear Educator,

My name is Cindy and I am the TPT author of Cindy’s Bilingual Box. I

am very excited to share this resource with you as it is so important
that we use current social justice issues to teach our students today. As
a Teach for Justice grant recipient, I wanted to include something I was
passionate about.
This free resource uses the picture book, “Dreamers” by Yuyi
Morales to shares the story of the millions of immigrants we have in
this beautiful country, which I love. My family story is one of immigrants.
I am the daughter of immigrants who reached their American dreams.
I have a few family and friends who are DACA recipients. I know this
country is better because of their contributions..
My goal was to provide a resource you could use in your
classroom with a Latin American story because they are the largest
minority in the United States. Maybe some of them are your students. I
do plan on creating another resource soon that showcases more
immigrant stories from other countries.
If you have any questions email me directly at
cindylope@gmail.com. You can follow me on Instagram, Facebook and TPT
for more updates. If you post on social media make sure to tag #tpt
#teachforjustice. Thank you for your support.

Happy Teaching,

Cindy

Unit Lesson Plan
FREE Lesson: Who are the Dreamers?
Picture Book: “Dreamers”
Author: Yuyi Morales
Illustrator: Yuyi Morales
ISBN: 9780823440559
Publisher: Penguin Random House

As you read, discuss who dreamers are. Children who were brought to
the United States by their parents. Also talk to your class about the
symbolism of the butterflies in the illustrations. Butterflies migrate to
the United States from Mexico. Their offspring travel back to Mexico and
their offspring travel back to the United States! It is an ongoing cycle
that continues to happen every year. As you read stop and discuss these
questions…
• ”Why do you think Yuyi decided to leave with her daughter when she
crossed the border?”
• “If Yuyi had left her daughter in Mexico do you think her life may have
been different? How so”?
• “What kinds of things can we discover in a library”?

Activity #1: Write and draw about how the library helped Yuyi and her
family learn and become adjusted to being in the United States.

Activity #2: Write and draw the dreams you have for your own life.
