In January, when we reinstated the Reader’s Choice contest (formerly called The Best of ...), none of us could have anticipated the response this project
would receive.
The original plan was to announce the winners at the end of March or first of April, at the latest. Our plans — along with just about everyone else’s — were
derailed by COVID-19.
This project has become an experience that none of us in the office were prepared for. There were 167 categories, with the majority of them having a 1st,
2nd and 3rd place winner. Sandy Schnurbusch and myself made contact with approximately 500 businesses or individuals, along with our everyday news-
paper responsibilities. I was amazed at the new folks I got to know, and if you ask Sandy, she’ll even tell you she met some new folks too.
If you see your business listed and you didn’t get a call from either Sandy or me, get with us, we have your awards!
Almost all the votes came through on our website. We did receive some from the newspaper, but Perry County embraced our digital format, resulting in
more than 96,000 votes.
We will be doing this again next year, with a few changes. The biggest change will be a nomination period and then a voting time with a final ballot made
up from the businesses and individuals who were nominated. We will have more on this towards the end of the year.
For right now we just want to recognize and honor all the 2020 winners and let them have their time in the spotlight.
And really, who couldn’t use some positive recognition right now?
So wish these fine businesses and individuals congratulations next time you see them. Share in the joy and pride with those who make up our wonderful
community.
