I missed the payment deadline of August 21, 2020. Will I be charged a late payment fee?

No, late payment fees will not be assessed for Fall 2020 to any student.

Will I get a financial hold on my account if I haven’t paid my outstanding Fall 2020
balance, either in part or fully?
Financial holds will not be assessed until Mid-October to allow for students more time to make
payment arrangements. If students are not in good financial standing by early October, financial
holds will be placed, preventing registration for Spring 2021.

Please note: If you have enrolled in a payment plan and are up to date on installments, your
account is in good financial standing, as the future payments are scheduled. No holds will be
assessed.

If I don’t pay my bill, will my Fall 2020 classes be dropped?

No. The payment policy has been suspended for Fall 2020 and students will not be dropped
from their classes. However, holds will be placed in Mid-October for any student who has not
paid their bill or set-up a payment plan; this hold will prevent Spring 2021 registration.

I sent my tuition payment via a check through the mail. I don’t see it reflected on my
student account. What do I do?
Mail services at The New School are delayed as a result of the pandemic, but we will receive
the mail and process the payments as quickly as we possibly can.

No late payment fees or holds will be placed as a result of mail delays.

However, if you prefer, you may stop payment on the check and resubmit your tuition payment
electronically. For electronic payments options, please visit the Student Accounts website.

I am overseas and do not know how to pay my bill. Can you help?

How do I set up a payment plan? How many installments can I plan?

The New School offers both 4-month and 5-month payment plans for each semester. For Fall
2020, the first payment for the 4-month begins September 1; the first payment for the 5-month
plan began August 1. For more information about how to set-up a payment plan please visit the
Payment Plan website.

I don’t understand the new Maximum Tuition policy for this year. Can you help me
understand?
As a result of the expanded three-term calendar that Provost Marshall shared in his June 26
email, the university has instituted a temporary, academic year-based maximum tuition rate for
programs that are traditionally charged a full-time flat-rate on a semester-by-semester basis.
This means that in 2020-2021, students will be able to take a course load that fits their needs in
fall, spring, and summer semesters, including a full course load all three semesters, but not pay
more than they would have in a traditional full-time fall/spring semester pathway.

Student bills will look normal in the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters. Students will receive
an email in early March 2021 with the total yearly tuition charges they’ve been charged at that
point in time to help inform their Summer 2021 plans. During the summer 2021 semester,
students will initially see charges for any classes they take that, in a regular year, would put
them over the tuition maximum. This year, however, financial aid will be applied to offset these
charges so that their bill never exceeds the tuition maximum for their program. If you haven’t
already done so, please review the Tuition and Fees webpage to review the tuition method and
maximum tuition, where applicable, for your program.

Please review this document that walks through examples of how this new tuition maximum
works from a practical perspective. We hope it helps clarify the new tuition maximum. Should
you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at
myaccount@newschool.edu or 212.229.8930. You may now also reach us on Google Hangouts
at myaccount@newschool.edu or, preferably, make an appointment via Starfish!

I have an outstanding balance from a prior term, will I get a hold?

Any prior balance less than $2000 will not result in a financial hold. For balances above $2000,
students will be expected to pay their balance, at least to the $2000 threshold.

I sent an email to Student Accounts but have not received a response. How do I reach
someone to assist me?
Although the volume of emails is quite high as we approach the fall semester, the Student
Accounts team is committed to reply to all student inquiries as quickly as possible. When the
reality of the pandemic became apparent in mid-March, we quickly added new ways to connect
students with our staff, including Google Hangouts with myaccount@newschool.edu and Zoom
appointments via Starfish. You may choose one of these other options to connect with the
Student Account team.

I heard I am eligible to receive a $500 technology grant. How will I get that money?
Technology grants of $500 will be sent via the refund process to all registered, degree-seeking
students on August 31, the first day of the term. Student Accounts will check fall registration
logs once per week to issue the one-time grant to any student who registered late for classes.
○ Domestic students who have set up direct deposit will receive their technology
grant refund directly in their bank account. We encourage all students to sign up
for direct deposit on MyNewSchool to get the refund as quickly as possible.
Domestic students without direct deposit will have a paper check sent to the
Official Mailing Address on their student record. Please be sure to confirm your
Official Mailing Address in the Personal Information section of MyNewSchool.
○ International students will be sent their grant electronically through PayMyTuition.
When the grant has been processed, students will receive a notification and
instructions at their New School email address. Students will then have the
choice to accept the money in their home currency in a variety of formats specific
to each country.

I typically don’t carry a balance but the unexpected impact of the pandemic during Spring
2020 semester put me behind on paying my Spring 2020 bill.. If I have a remaining
balance from Spring 2020, what options do I have?
Some students have expressed that the unexpected interruption of the Spring 2020 term
disrupted their financial plans for paying the Spring 2020 term. As a result, Student Accounts
will work with students to create extended payment arrangements for their Spring 2020 student
account balances. Students who are in this situation will be contacted directly during the week
of August 24 to talk through the extended payment arrangements as well as plans for the
coming year. Note: past due balances from terms other than Spring 2020, will still be subject to
the hold procedures and payment expectations.
