Laboratory Exercises No. 7

The Cardiovascular System

Description: The heart is a small double pump that simultaneously pumps blood to and from body
cells through the systemic circulation and to and from the lungs through the pulmonary circulation.
The blood vessels that carry blood from the heart are called arteries and the blood vessels that carry
blood to the heart are called veins. This activity describes the structures and physiologic functions of
the cardiovascular system.

Instruction: The students are required to answer the following exercises.

I. Objectives: At the end of the activity, the students are able to:
1. Identify the major heart structures on models or charts.
2. Explain the differences in structure and function of the two types of heart valves.
3. Model or chart of the coronary circulation.

II. Materials:
1. Human heart model
2. Human torso or chart showing the heart/pulmonary/systemic circulation
6. Pencil
7. Colored Pencils (Red, Blue, and Purple color)
8. Reference books

Activity No. 1.

A. Label the surface features of the heart. Select your answer inside the box.

Anterior interventricular sulcus Apex of the hear

Auricle of left atrium Auricle of right atrium
Base of heart Coronary sulcus
Left ventricle Right ventricle

B. Label the surface features of the heart. Select your answer inside the box.

Adipose tissue Coronary sulcus

Left auricle Left ventricle
Posterior interventricular sulcus Right auricle
Right Ventricle

C. Label the great vessels of the heart. Select your answer inside the box.

Descending aorta Inferior vena cava
Left pulmonary artery Left pulmonary veins
Ligamentum arteriosum Pulmonary trunk
Right pulmonary artery Right pulmonary veins
Superior vena cava

D. Label the internal features of the heart, frontal section. Select your answer inside the box.

Aortic (semilunar) valve Bicuspid valve (mitral)

Chordae tendineae Coronary sinus opening
Inferior vena cava opening Interventricular septum
Left atrium Left ventricle
Papillary muscle Pulmonary (semilunar) valve
Pulmonary vein openings Right atrium
Right ventricle Superior vena cava opening
Trabeculae carneae Tricuspid valve

Activity No. 2.
A. Trace the flow of blood through the heart and lungs by listing in order all vessels, heart
chambers, and valve through which the blood passes, starting a with:
Aorta Right atrium
Aortic (semilunar) valve Right Ventricle
Bicuspid (mitral) valve Systemic arteries
Left atrium Systemic capillaries
Left ventricle Tricuspid valve
Pulmonary capillaries Systemic veins
Pulmonary arteries Venae cavae and coronary sinus
Pulmonary (semilunar) valve Pulmonary trunk
Pulmonary veins

B. Fill in the blanks. Write the term that fits the description.
1. Arteries that supply blood to the cardiac muscle.
2. Layer of heart wall containing cardiac muscle.
3. Extension of the atria
4. Lines the heart chambers
5. Pointed inferior part of the heart
6. Two heart pumps; lower heart chambers
7. Superior heart chambers
8. Another name for visceral pericardium
9. Wide superior part of the heart
10. Blood pumped by right ventricle (oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor)
11. Blood pumped by left ventricle (oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor)
12. Enlarged muscles in ventricles attached to chordae tendinae
13. Anterior branch of the left coronary artery; lies in anterior
interventricular
14. Posterior branch of the right coronary artery; lies in posterior
interventricular sulcus.
15. Branch of the left coronary artery that curves around left side
and lies in the coronary sulcus.
16. Branch of the right coronary artery that supplies the anterior
right ventricle.
17. Branch of left coronary artery that supplies both ventricles.
18. Vein that drains coronary circulation into the right atrium
19. Vein that drains the anterior ventricles.
20. Vein that drains the posterior ventricles.
