Week 4 Discussion

Airean Raguindin posted,

According to Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) statistics, DM is the 7th leading cause of death

in the United States with the number of cases increasing annually. HP2020 has stated its goal to

reduce the disease burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) and improve the quality of life for all

persons who have, or are at risk for, DM. Reducing the number of new cases of diagnosed

diabetes in the population was listed as one of HP2020s objectives. Educating patients who have

DM or are at risk of DM can help in not only meeting this goal, but also other HP2020 DM goals

such as reducing the DM death rate and the rate of lower extremity amputations in persons with

The nurse practitioner can better serve the population in which they serve by understanding

the community’s population demographics such as ethnicity, cultural background, levels of

formal education, and access to resources. “Diabetes self-management education and support has

been shown to be cost-effective by reducing hospital admissions and readmissions” (ADA, n.d.).

“Health education involves not only providing relevant information but also facilitating health-related

behavior change” (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). This can be done by establishing strong, trusting, long-

term relationships with our patients.

Maintaining a trustworthy relationship with the patient is the first step for successful education

physical fitness (Kahan & Manson, 2017). Early-stage awareness also plays a crucial role in

healthy body weight maintenance. Parents should be aware of healthy diet options to initiate that

healthy eating habit in their children at their young age. Individuals should be aware that being

overweight can cause more health issues, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleeping

issues like sleep apnea.

There is no doubt that nutrition and weight directly link to fitness, healthy growth and

development for all age individuals; on the other hand, eating healthy also benefits people to

decrease their probabilities of developing various health problems. (ODPHP, 2020). Parents need
