Modul 4 – Advanced Reservoir Flow Solutions
Solutions to Radial Flow Diffusivity Equation (Line Source Solution)
Due date: 13 November 2020

Given:

In this assignment you are to derive several solutions of the radial flow diffusivity equation, which is
given as:

……………………………… (1)

The initial and boundary conditions considered in this assignment are:

● Initial Condition:

𝑝D(𝑟D, 𝑡D ≤ 0) = 0 [Uniform Initial Pressure Distribution] ................................................. (2)

● Inner Boundary Condition:

[q = Constant (production case)] …………………………. (3)

● Outer Boundary Condition 1:

𝑝D(𝑟D → ∞, 𝑡 D) = 0 ["Infinite-Acting" Reservoir ‹→ No Reservoir Boundary] ................ (4)

● Outer Boundary Condition 2:

𝑝D(𝑟𝑒D, 𝑡D) = 0 [Constant pressure at the Outer Boundary (Constant at initial pressure)] ......... (5)

Instructions/Questions :

(a) List all the assumptions that are inherent in the radial diffusivity equation (Eq.1)
(b) Derive the solution of Eq.1 with initial and boundary conditions listed in Eq. 2,3,4. Use Laplace
transform to derive the solution in Laplace domain and give the inverted solution in real domain
(hint: you will end up with Ei function solution).
(c) Show that for sufficiently late time, Ei function solution in (b) can be approximated by
logarithmic function such that

(hint: show plot of solution from (b) and (c) and show at what tD both approaches give similar
result)
(d) Derive the solution of the radial flow diffusivity equation for constant pressure outer boundary.
That is the boundary condition defined in Eq (5). Show that dimensionless pressure at well
follows:

Plot the dimensionless pressure in well against dimensionless time for several values of 𝑟𝑒D.
For 𝑟𝑒D = 100 when will the steady state condition reached?
