ARGUMENTATION AND DEBATE

1. Distinction of argumentation and debate.

- Argumentation is a method of logic that is systematically accompanied by a concept, behavior or
theory. Debate is a formal discussion of arguments. Debate is a form of Argumentation.
Argumentation is commonly expressed through written paper or an oral discussion whilst a
Debate is just orally executed

2. “Debate is not just a mere verbal wrangling”

- Debate is an exchange of arguments based on facts and not just a personal opinion. Debate
requires legit sources to supply the argument that it’s trying to prove.
3. What are the two methods of approach in the work of argumentation? What is the purpose of
each?
- The two methods of approach in argumentation are the appeal to reason or intellect called
conviction and the appeal to the feelings called persuasion. Conviction or the appeal to intellect
aims to have an intellectual agreement. On the other hand, the appeal to the feelings or
persuasion leads others to a new behavior.

4. Is conviction alone enough in establishing sound human relations? Why? Illustrate your answer.
- Conviction alone is not enough to established a sound human relation. Despite of the proven
facts that one may show, the emotions still take part for a person to fully accept the truth. For
example, “God is real”. Even there are given facts that even science cannot explain, there are
still people who doesn’t accept the reality of God unless they have experienced Him first hand.

5. “Argumentation is essential in establishing sound human relations.”

- Argumentation is indeed essential in establishing sound human relations to have a mutual
agreement in certain topics that 2 or more individuals may discuss. Sometimes it may lead them
to agree to disagree but the fact that they both know the argument of each other makes them
have a sound relationship together. Man's beliefs determines Man's actions.

6. Is argumentation needed only by lawyers?

- No. Argumentation is need for any individual. Just as like in the point mentioned in number 5,
argumentation is essential in establishing sound human relations. Argumentation is defined as
both informal and formal exchange of thoughts in the goal of having mutual agreement for two
or more parties.

7. What positive personal qualities are developed through training in argumentation and debate?
Elaborate.
- Argumentation and debate are both form of art. Both requires skills in reasoning that is being
developed as practiced. Since both Argumentation and debate are facts, it also develops the
sense of seeking the truth in an individual. As a person indulge of reasoning out, the
understanding of one’s self is also developed.
8. From our discussion, what particular lesson have you learned?
- Firstly, I learned what differentiates argumentation and debate. I learned the two methods of
approach in argumentation and I also learned that in argumentation, there are factors involved
such as logic, psychology. I also learned the process of work in argumentation from its creation,
selection, argumentation, and up to its presentation.
