THE NEW GOVERNMENT

Our country is a democratic and republican state. It is a republic with a presidential form
of government wherein power is equally divided among its three branches: executive, legislative
and judiciary. First, the executive branch. It is a branch composed of the President and the Vice
President who are elected by a direct popular vote and serve a term of six years. Together with
them are the cabinet secretaries which are appointed by the president. The next is the legislative.
This branch is authorized to make laws, alter and repeal them through the power vested in the
Philippine Congress. The third one is, the judiciary. This holds the power to settle controversies
involving the rights that are legally demandable and enforceable. This branch determines
whether or not there has been a grave abuse of discretion on the part of the government. One
basic corollary in a presidential system of government is the principle of separation of powers
wherein legislation belongs to Congress, execution to the Executive, and settlement of legal
controversies to the Judiciary.

Just this month of June, we already have inaugurated the new set of officials to run for
our government. Our newly-elected President Rodrigo Duterte vowed a government that would
be compassionate to the helpless, hopeless, and defenseless but harsh on the corrupt, criminals
and wrongdoers. In the past few months, the Duterte administration accomplished a couple of
things. One of which is, more than 600 thousand drug users and pushers from all around the
country surrendered themselves. Another is, President Rodrigo Duterte finally signed the
Executive Order stating that all officials should be transparent and the people should have the
right to know this information. This was only a few example of what our government had
already accomplished. Even if they were currently facing with a lot of controversies, they still
manage to work with utmost responsibility.

In my own perspective, I agree to what President Duterte is doing in the battle against the
illegal drug users and pushers. It is because he is just doing it for our safety and for the good of
our country. It would be a great advantage for us if illegal drugs are totally eliminated. However,
the extra judicial killings have increased recently because of this issue. That is why, the illegal
drug users and pushers should surrender and settle with the government peacefully. We need a
leader like our newly-elected President because I believe that no country can be progressive
unless citizens are law-abiding and well-disciplined.
