Scenario for Abstract Writing Mini-Workshop

You are preparing a scientific publication that reports the synthesis and analysis of cis-
dichlorobis-(1,2-diaminoethane)chromium(III) chloride - cis-[CrCl2(en)2]Cl.2H2O.
Formula for 1,2-diaminoethane (en) is C2H4(NH2)2
The compound was synthesized by the following method:
In a 250 cm3 beaker, dissolve chromium chloride (10 g) in 30 cm3 dimethylformamide (DMF –
C3H7NO). Heat the solution on a hot plate and reduce the volume to half. Add 5 cm3 1,2-
diaminoethane slowly using a dropper. Precipitate the purple solid using methanol and collect
using a sintered glass filter funnel. Dry at the pump and determine the yield.
Note: The synthesis is typically straightforward without DMF molecules in the final compound
but this is not always the case.
The following results were obtained:

The percentage water was found by a rough method by first dividing the sample into three
portions, recording the masses, followed by dehydration of each sample in an oven at 160 °C and
recording the weight loss.
