Homework 1: due Sunday (Feb 7) 6pm

The homework should be turned in by 6pm on the due date.

Please show all work. You will not be given credit unless your reasoning is clear. Also, I am going to
be very strict about hand writing. I expect your homework to be written clearly and legibly. Messy
handwriting will be penalized. Also, I will not accept homework after the due date.

For this homework make sure to read Chapter 1 of the Callen text along with my week 1 notes. Go over
the example problem on Page 22, and what I did in class regarding the p-V diagram and applications of
the conservation of energy equation

dU =− pdV + d́ Q.
PV diagram problems require only conservation of energy and the fact that an integral of dU is path
independent. Note also that an adiabat on a PV diagram is a path along which d́ Q=0 .

1. Callen 2nd edition problem 1.8-3 (page 24).

2. Callen 1.8-4. Hint. You have to find the function P(V ) such that the work done on the gas
∫ P ( V ) dV is the change in energy U f −U i .
3. Given the following equations for entropy. Determine if each equation is consistent with postulates II,
III, and IV. So you have to check if the following are satisfied:

i. Extensivity: S ( λU , λV , λN ) =λS(U ,V , N)

ii. Monotonicity: ( ∂∂US )

V ,N
>0

iii. Vanishing of entropy at zero temperature: ( ∂∂US ) V ,N

=0 implies S=0.
