This project seeks to analyse isotropic rectangular plate using the Finite Element Analysis
method. As stated in the aim of the project we seek to determine the deflection of this rectangular
plate using different boundary conditions and various type of load application. The solution is
programmed on MATLAB program, deformations for various thickness of the plate is obtained
and this result are verified by using a commercial Finite Element Analysis Software called
ANSYS. The valued were thus obtained and compared.
For the purpose of analysis, the 4-node quadrilateral element was used. The Geometrical
parameters is hereby stated thus;
Size of plate 2m x 1m
Modulus of elasticity (E) = 70 x 109 Pa
Poison’s ratio = 0.33
Mesh sizing
4x2 mesh
8x4 mesh
Boundary Conditions.
1) All edges clamped
2) All edges simply supported.
3) Adjacent sides clamped, with Adjacent sides simply supported
4) Opposite sides for short spans clamped with longer spans simply supported
5) Opposite sides for long spans clamped with shorter spans simply supported
6) Short span free (Clamped & Simply Supported).
a) Short span free Clamped
b) Short Span Free Simply Supported.
7) Long span free (Clamped & Simply Supported).
a) Long span free Clamped
b) Long Span Free Simply Supported.
