‘wet IESL COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Graduate Diploma Level — Final Examination 2015 Academic Year CE5001— DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES Time allowed: THREE Hours Only 2016 May INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: 1. This is a closed book exam. It is an offence to be in possession of unauthorized material during the examination. 2. This paper has five (5) questions. Answer Three questions. All questions carry equal marks. 3. Assume reasonable values for any data not given in or with the examination paper. Clearly state such assumptions made on the script. 4. In case of any doubt as to the interpretation of the wording of a question, make suitable assumptions and clearly state them on the script. Refer BS5950 — Design of Structural Steel Members UI NI A pavilion of cricket ground is supported with S275 steel Universal beam (I section). Following details are first noticed by design engineer. Effective span — 5m Beam is cantilever. Dead load including self weight of the beam — 12 kN/m Imposed load acting on the beam — 8 KN/m 356 x 171x 67 UB is proposed to use as steel beam.(Refer data sheet for Sectional properties) The beam should be designed according to British Standard (BS5950) and carry out following steps. a). Find the characteristic design load applied on the beam b). By analyzing the beam for given loading find the critical Shear Force and Bending ‘Moment with their respective locations. ©). Check the shear capacity of the beam. 4). Check the Moment capacity of the beam by assur laterally restrained. ©). If the compression flange is not laterally restrained check the beam for lateral Torsional buckling, g the compression flange is fully h). Carry out the deflection check for the beam. Maximum deflection of the simply supported beam with uniformly distributed loading can be calculated with Lawl! 6. - 8 ET aggpeniilastic Modulus of steel is 200000 Némm? QUESTION 2 . A roof truss for school building is made out of steel is shown in Figure Q.2. The truss is loaded as shown in figure Q.2 with terms of W. Where W = 1.4 Gk +1.6 Qe : The unfactored dead load (Gx) is 12 KN and unfactored imposed load is 8 KN. The truss is : simply supported at L and L2 with masonry columns Alll the members are in same length of 2 m. Each member is connected to a gusset plate (12 mm thickness) at its ends with at least two M20 standard bolts. UL u2 e Ww Ww Li 12 L3 . Figure Q.2 4). Analyze the roof truss and show the member forees in tabular form. Indicate the sign - (Tension or compression) in same table, b). Check the suitability of 100 x 100 x 8 single angle section of $275 for the web . members. (For both tensile and compressive members) ©). Check the suitability of 100 x 100 x 8 double angle (back to back connection) of $275 for upper chord members. @. Check the suitability of 100 x 100 x 8 double angle (back to back connection) of 8275 for bottom chord members ©). If the major axis moment of S kNm is applied to the bottom chord member check the suitability of the section. QUESTION 3 A cantilever beam of effective span 3m is supported at one support with universal column 305 x 305 x 97 of $275. The beam is loaded with Dead load including self weight of the beam — 12 kN/m Imposed load acting on the beam — 8 kN/m : 4). Find the axial toad apply on the column, b). Check the suitability of the selected section if the ¢ ‘centricity at the supports are zero. ¢). Lind the bending moment transter to the coulumn from the cantilever heam. 4). Check the suitability of the section considering axial load and major axis moment for following two cases. i). Compression flange is fully restrained for lateral movements. ii), Compression flange is not restrained for lateral movement. ). Explain the term “bi axial bending of the column” with suitable examples UESTION 4 a). The figure Q4 shows the bolted connection with M18 bolts. The three bolts shown in the figure used to connect two 10 mm steel plates. Check the load carrying capacity of the connection respect to i). Bolt shear Bolt bearing Plate bearing iv). Block shear v). Check the detailing of the connection, 60 Ree pehe All dimensions are in mm. Figure Q4 b). i) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of welded connection over bolted connection ii), Figure 4.2 shows the beam to column connection that has been proposed. A single fin plate of 10mm thickness and 250mm depth in S275 steel has been welded to the column flange with 6mm fillet welds on both sides, The weld has a strength of 220 N/mm’ and has been made along the entire depth of the fin plate.
